Our drivers need to be protected by protecting ourselves as drivers. It is not enough to simply pass drivers ed and earn a license but practicing safe driving helps ourselves and saves the lives of others on the road. All roads are shared so it is important to utilize taught safe-driving techniques to prevent accidents and deaths.
Firstly, drivers ed is essential in reducing the number of deaths because these techniques teach drivers the rules of the road and the importance of sharing the road. For example, drivers education teaches students about traffic lights, rules, and lane markings. Without proper indication of street lights and marking, a broken lane can easily be mistaken for a pass or a car parked wrong on the street. Students need to be aware of basic techniques so they are able to build on them. Once students are able to decipher which lanes are passible or which signs mean certain things, they are able to increase their reaction time, decreasing death in drivers.
Secondly, taking steps such as teaching different state driving laws can be essential to decreasing the amount of deaths because a great majority of the time drivers drive outside their native state, so knowing different laws and signs can be beneficial to drivers who are unsure of which sign means which. Even simple means of knowing the correct speed of school and residential zone can save a child's life.
I have experienced being in a car crash when I was a small child from the result of a driver who drive outside of their lane. This accident could have been avoided had the driver looked at his lane correctly.
Last but certainly not least, becoming a safe driver does not happen overnight but taking careful steps such as waiting 2-3 seconds after a green light occurs, obeying local speed laws and signaling can save my life as well as others. Not to mention being a designated driver if a friend is too intoxicated.
In conclusion, safe driving needs to be rigorously instructed because many people lose their life simply from getting to one destination to the other. Driving is a privilege and should remain as such.
