Responsible
Driving - The Only Way to Drive

By
Macie Despain

My
parents always tell me that the most dangerous thing I will ever do
is drive a car. So, I always choose to be safe behind the wheel,
regardless of what is happening, whether I am running late or I’m
in a hurry. I have so many plans for my future, such as going to a
good college and majoring in something that I love doing. Making an
irresponsible choice while driving can change all of that.

Earlier
this year, my family lost my little cousin. She was only 15 years
old. So I know how the pain and suffering that losing someone that
young impacts a family. Her death has sparked a fire in me. I have
vowed to always make the right decisions while driving because I
never want to cause another family the same pain and suffering that
my family has experienced these past few months.

Since
I have learned to drive, I always make sure that I am following the
laws of the road because they are there to keep everyone safe. I
never go over the speed limit. Whenever I am with friends and see
that they are going over the speed limit, I ask them to please slow
down and go to the appropriate speed.

A
majority of the time that I am driving, I am bringing my little
brothers to and from places. I always make sure they are buckled
before I start the car. Once we start driving, their lives are
literally in my hands, so I make sure I am extra responsible and make
good choices. I don’t have music playing, I double check that
everyone has a seatbelt on and I don’t get distracted by anything
else. I would never be able to live with myself if one of them was
hurt because of a careless mistake I made while driving.

I
have definitely developed some habits and skills throughout my first
year of driving. My number one rule for people who are sitting in the
car while I am driving is: You can have your phone out, but I should
not hear it. Loud noises distract me from my day to day activities,
so I really don’t want them distracting me while I am driving
people. My parents also enforce this rule when they are driving me
and my brothers. Loud noises can be very distracting and can cause
people to crash.

Making
safe and right choices while driving is the only way to drive. If you
are not doing that, then you should not be driving. The choices you
make while driving affect so many people’s lives. One stupid
decision you make while behind the wheel of the car can change
someone’s life forever. I want to always make the right choices
while driving so that no one perishes because of the wrong actions I
could make. I am determined to be a safe driver now and for the rest
of my life.
