Were(n’t) Made to be Broken

With
the number of drivers rising every year, it’s increasingly
important to educate the public on proper road safety and defensive
driving. Effective drivers ed implements both the information
from the written handbook and road vehicle maneuverability
experiences, so the students leave with the knowledge and skills to
hit the roadways. Knowing the proper safety protocol can reduce the
risk of collisions and other accidents.

In
order to reduce the number of deaths on the road, we need to
emphasize the significance of defensive driving. Even if an
experienced driver is following every rule perfectly, there is still
a danger of the other vehicles on the road. Not paying attention to
the actions of them is a surefire way to end up in an accident at
some point. It’s very important to stay vigilant and understand
that not everyone is going to do what they should, and keep spatial
awareness of the cars around you. The rules of the road exist for a
reason – to keep everyone safe. Follow the rules of the road, and
don’t try to get around them for personal convenience.

While
I have done my best to remain attentive behind the wheel, I have
witnessed plenty of irresponsibility in other drivers, including my
own parents. Texting or reading while driving was a common occurrence
when I was younger. As a passenger, I remind them to keep their eyes
on the road and offer to relay any text messages so they don’t have
to. Car accidents can be devastating and unexpected,


Everyone,
including myself, should drive with their cell phone either silenced
or on “do not disturb” mode to reduce the urge to use it. Use
spatial awareness and watch for any warning signs from the
surrounding cars. Do not drive when considerably emotional, as that
can be distracting or hinder decision making. Don’t drive while
cognitively impaired, and take the warnings on medications seriously.
Follow the rules of the road as they are intended, and don’t try to
find a way around them. They were established to keep the public
safe. Keep in mind your blind spots, and take the necessary
precautions when completing actions like U-turns, lane changes, and
anything else.
