When I was younger, my father was in a collision with someone who ran a red light. It wasn’t a major accident, but his wrist was badly injured. When I saw his injury and heard what happened, I dreaded learning to drive. I was terrified of getting into a car crash. Over time, I learned that while it’s essential to exercise caution, driving isn’t something to fear. Drivers ed is vital to reducing driving related deaths and accidents. Learning how to operate the vehicle, staying updated on traffic laws, and practicing driving all improve drivers ed, and make the road a safer place. Knowing how to react calmly during road emergencies can mean the difference between life and death. The more informed the driver is, the better.
To reduce car crashes and the number of driving related deaths, it is necessary to actively take steps to prevent and avoid things that will impair driving ability. Distractions, road rage, intoxication, and exhaustion are all leading causes of car accidents. By simply waiting to check the phone, taking a moment to cool off, or having someone else drive, the chances of getting in an accident are significantly lowered. It could save your life and the life of someone else.
Though my family members are safe drivers, I have still experienced some minor car accidents and incidents. I once had to call the police after an aggravated man rammed the rear of my grandmother’s car and started yelling in a parking lot. I recall being in the car with my mother when an unstable and intoxicated woman almost crashed into us, along with several construction workers. Another time, a truck driver who was not paying attention changed lanes and nearly drove my father and I off the road. I am thankful that my family and I were not harmed any of these times. All of these incidents were the results of negligent and reckless drivers, and could have easily been prevented by being more careful and considerate. However, encounters like these— along with thorough practice and instruction from my parents— have taught me to be twice as observant on the road.
To be a better and safer driver, one must know their abilities and limits, be prepared for the inevitable, and be attentive. Before starting the car, every driver should determine if they are in the right condition to be driving. Considering one’s limits and letting a safer driver take the wheel deters car accidents. Many things can happen when driving, from an encounter with an awful driver to a flat tire, so it is useful to be prepared to handle any situation. Sharing useful information and advice helps others be safer drivers. Above all, being considerate and having good judgment are the best things anyone can do when driving. Speeding, road rage, distracted driving, and reckless driving are never worth the risk of taking a life. Safety is the number one priority, and it should never be jeopardized.
