What people seem to forget is that not only are vehicles an easy form
of transportation, but they can also be weapons if not handled in a
proper manner. The number of deaths due to reckless driving increases
daily and lives are being cut short because of situations that might
have been preventable.

For starters, educating drivers is of great importance and a
tremendous help when it comes to lowering the death rate due to
driving, especially when it comes to new and inexperienced drivers.
Educating drivers gives them more knowledge and awareness of what to
do and expect when traveling on the road. Without educating drivers,
people would be more at risk and unaware of road regulations that
keep drivers safe. Not only is teaching and informing drivers a way
to save lives, but it also prevents harmless mistakes that could
easily be avoided. Besides educating, there are numerous ways to
minimize fatalities associated with driving. One way to decrease car
fatalities would be to completely get rid of distractions. Cell
phones are one of the main distractions that cause people behind the
wheel to stop paying attention to the road. An app that could shut
down text messaging and social media until the car is parked would be
a huge step to preventing car fatalities. This solution causes people
to be more aware of the road and gets rid of the biggest distraction
people have.

Thankfully I have never been involved in a car accident, but I have
witnessed people close to me make unwise decisions while behind the
wheel. Countless times I have seen my family members text while
driving, speed through a yellow light, or disregard the speed limit
entirely. Some steps I could take to help others would be to explain
their mistake if I’m present in the car with them. Telling the
driver about their mistake and going into detail about the
consequences that come with that mistake could make the driver
consider repeating the mistake. As for myself, to become a better
driver I could make sure to put all my focus and attention towards
the road and try my hardest to not put anybody’s life in danger.

People need to realize that the decisions they make while driving can
drastically change their lives and lives around them. While educating
and keeping cellphones out of reach won’t get rid of car
fatalities, it will help potentially avoid a tragedy.
