Driver
education is very important in reducing the number of deaths as a
result of driving. If drivers learn the consequences of their actions
before getting on the road, they will be more cautious and therefore
less likely to get in an accident. To reduce the number of deaths
related to driving, people should practice safe driving habits, such
as not driving under the influence, texting and driving, or driving
while sleep deprived. While I am grateful that I have never been in a
car accident myself, I was a witness to one this summer. Driving down
the interstate in middle of nowhere Utah, my family and I witnessed a
small car clip a semi and roll over. Thankfully everyone was okay,
but we stayed with the victims until the first responders arrived. It
was devastating to see the shock and terror on the driver’s faces.
The cause of the accident was that the driver of the small car had
seen something on the side of the road, took her eyes off the road
for a second, causing her to slightly swerve into the other lane and
clip the semi. If drivers had more education about how to be safe
behind the wheel, the driver would have known the dangers of taking
her eyes off the road, even for just a second, and this incident
could have been avoided. Some steps and that I and others should take
to become safer drivers are 1) put our phones away while driving, 2)
never get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or
alcohol, and 3) don’t drive when we are extremely tired. While
following these steps do not guarantee that you won’t be in an
accident, they do greatly reduce that risk and make the roads safer
for you and everyone else.
