Driver
safety is an issue in the United States that needs to be addressed.
Driver related casualties are increasing and have already surpassed
the amount in wars. Teens and children make up a great percentage of
these fatalities. There are multiple actions that can be taken to
prevent this.

There is great importance of drivers ed in reducing
deaths due to driving incidents. Anyone can get on the road and turn
a wheel, but not everyone knows how to do so safely. There are a few
steps we can take to reduce the amount of driving-related deaths. If
we teach teens in high school what and what not to do in other ways
than by book, it would be more successful. Some accidents are due to
the roads not being up kept. Another way to potentially decrease the
death toll is to have federal mandates on the upkeep of roads put in
place.

I have been in a car accident due to someone driving
inebriated. It was early in the morning and we were sitting at a
light. Our light turned green and we took off. A man to the right of
us was going miles over the speed limit and ran the light. He hit the
car to the left of us and we spun. There were no casualties but a
woman was trapped in her car and my sister broke her tailbone. This
could have been prevented if the man decided not to drink and drive.

A step I could take to be a safer driver is to be less
distracted. My phone is a great distraction and could put me in
danger. I could put it down while driving because no matter what it
is, it can wait. Hopefully, I can help others be safer drivers by
being an example. They will understand that the smallest thing could
put their lives in danger. With safer driving, fewer lives will be
lost.
