Bang! Swoosh. Screech! These are the sounds associated with driving. A bullet zooming through the air, switching direction, and slamming down hard. Why is it that kids are afraid of guns yet they aren’t afraid of what they can do in a car? Why is it that teenagers are dying from car crashes more than any other cause in the world? And why is it that wrecks seem to be normalized in this generation? I remember countless peers saying that “everyone gets in a wreck” and thinking that this is stupid. It sounds so dumb to say that it's “normal” for people to get into a life-threatening situation. Even in my own space, I see people doing irresponsible things when it comes to driving such as talking on the phone or playing with the music instead of paying attention to the road. I see people smoking in the car and puffs of smoke clouding their vision. And I am the one being affected by it. I am the one in danger when those people get careless with their actions. I am the one grabbing the seat and praying that I’ll get home in one piece. But it isn’t just me. I must give credit to all those on the road that are affected by the careless acts of drivers who don’t care about the law. Each car that passes by is in danger, each pedestrian that crosses the road is in danger, and each kid in the car seat who deserves a good life may not reach that point because of the carelessness of drivers. But even in the midst of this bad news, we must also be grateful for the progress that the older generation has made in fixing the situation. The most important of which is driver's education. Driver’s education is the only reason we can trust people on the road. Driving is simply mutual trust that everyone has with one another. You have to trust that the drivers around you are capable enough not to cause any wrecks. Because we know that everyone is required to go through driver's ed, trusting those drivers is a little bit easier. Driver’s education provides people with safe and reliable instruction that lets people get comfortable with driving. Like my parents always say, “the number one way to not get into a wreck is to get off your phone. The number two way is to be comfortable and relaxed when driving.” I believe that Driver’s Education is a very important step in the lives of everyone because learning how to properly drive is essential to everyone you pass on the road. For me, being a part of driver’s education will release a lot of stress that comes from the responsibility of driving as well as a sense of accomplishment knowing that I am a certified driver that is trusted by the government. If people were to take driver’s education very seriously and take to heart the lessons learned, I think many deaths on the road could be prevented. Driver’s education is very important for every new driver, and I am grateful for these requirements. A step that I think could be beneficial for causing fewer deaths would be to make the driver's education course necessary for adults to review every few years to make sure that their driving stays in top shape. I think that if people were to be reminded of the things they learned in the course, a lot more mistakes could be avoided on the road and therefore fewer deaths caused. But also I think that the penalties for driving should be increased. This is a very necessary step because I believe this could deter people from becoming too comfortable driving the wrong way. I think that if people had a bigger threat to themselves if they didn’t follow the law when it comes to driving, people would be more focused on driving the right way and therefore save lives. But this is something that the government should do, not me. The things I can do is to remind drivers of the things they forget like adjusting mirrors or using the turn signal. I can concentrate on the road as well so instead of one set of eyes there will be two. I can make sure people have their seatbelts on, and children stay out of the front seat. These little things will go a long way in reinforcing the good ideas into people so they won’t make any mistakes they regret.
