Distractions that teens face a lot while being on the road is being on their cellphone, I know this from my own experience and others. It is super easy for teens to become tempted to pick up their phones to scroll on social media, send a text, or change the song, this interferes with reaction time and attention span on the road. Peer pressure is a real problem that teens face. I experience this often, I feel like I must respond to a message as soon as I receive it. The usage of a cell phone is not the only thing that puts pressure on teens, friends can also cause peer pressure. Some teen drivers may feel like they must speed and show off in front of their friends just to impress them. Lack of experience can lead to incidents or poor decision making.
Teens can overcome these challenges by setting boundaries for themselves. Creating effective driving habits can help a lot. Putting away a cellphone or turning it off can help with the temptation of being on the phone. Some smartphones also have the feature called do not disturb. While driving, this feature silences all text and phone calls. Cellphone usage is one of the major activities that distracts teens, however having responsible passengers around can encourage safe driving. Someone who is an experienced driver can help overcome any peer pressure and lack of experience.
A few months back, I was merging onto the highway. As I was merging into the left lane, I was cautious to check my rear-view mirror, side mirror, and I turned to my left to check my blind spot to see if any cars were coming into ongoing traffic. As I began to merge to the left lane an oversized truck hit the back of my compact vehicle. I pulled over to my right shoulder, then checked for injuries for all parties that involved, exchanged insurance information with the other driver, and the police made a police report. Considering this was my first wreck this experience was a revelation. Having self awareness of your complete surroundings is vital while driving. This experience has taught me to predict dangers before they happen. Keeping a 2-3 car distance from other vehicles and keeping your eyes focused on the road are lessons learned.
The car accident shows lack of experience because I was not properly aware of the truck that was coming into ongoing traffic.
Driving school is a resource I would have loved to be a part of, and I highly recommend it to all teens. To obtain a drivers license or improve driving skills individuals can enroll in an institution that provides formal instruction on how to work a motor vehicle. Driving school gives teens the basic knowledge of driving such as traffic laws, safe driving practices, and how to use a vehicle.
A certified instructor typically ensures learners are learning from a practical and theoretical perspective. Teenagers must hold themselves accountable in learning how to drive properly. Driving school can prepare teenagers and all people for the road.
Communities can help safer driving practices amongst teens by having a quarterly teen bash. The teen bash involves food, fun, music, and teen driving seminars and tables with driving pamphlet essentials. During the teen bash many organizations will come out to support teens with the fundamental rules of driving. Schools could have mentors or speakers come speak at their school providing students with driving skills and laws. As it relates to teens encouraging safe driving we need to promote driving the speed limit.
As I reflect on teen driver safety and the role of education it is imperative to have self awareness. Sharing my firsthand experiences, biggest challenges, and distractions are all actions that I overcome and will continue as I develop into an experienced driver.
