Driver education is extremely important because not everyone right after they get their license is aware of the dangers of driving, different driving techniques to stay safe, or even the statistics of fatalities from car accidents. It is very important to instill it in young drivers so they can build good habits for the rest of their life. I am very fortunate to live in an area where driving safety is promoted so heavily, but I do know that not every area has this kind of education. It is very important that every area has driving education. There are many areas of dangerous driving to be educated about such as distracted driving, drowsy driving, speeding, seatbelt use, and impaired driving. There are also many ways to be a more safe and defensive driver like following the car in front of you at a safe distance, preparing for erratic drivers, and knowing how to check your car’s blindspot. The World Health Organization stated that about 1.19 million people die every year because of road traffic crashes. Statistics like these can really open people’s eyes and make them more receptive to learning about driving safety.
There are many ways to reduce driving related deaths. Education through social media is a big one. Social media, such as TikTok, Instagram, X, and others are still continuing to grow in popularity among people of all ages. As more and more people spend more and more time on social media, it would make sense for driver education to be put on there. Another way is increasing the amount of driver safety programs. It is important to have these programs both online and in person to fit everyone. If someone wants to be involved and driver safety, they should have the opportunity to with resources that fit them.
I unfortunately have had experience with a family member in a car accident. Back in December of last year my grandpa was involved in a fatal car accident. He had a heart attack while he was driving which caused him to swerve onto the other side of the road, and he got into a head-on collision with a van going the opposite way. After this, we found out that he had symptoms in the months before that of various health issues that were warning signs, but he did not end up getting checked for any. My grandpa’s passing really affected my entire family because we have never suffered a loss that close to us and oftentimes I look back on this and wonder if he was more educated about the dangers of medical accidents on the road that he would’ve gotten checked. My family still feels the effects of my grandpa’s passing very heavily and even my other family members have expressed to me how they wish that they would’ve done something if they knew before.
I believe that a big step in reducing the number of deaths related to driving is education. At my high school I am in the Medical Health Technology program where we promote student wellness and a big part of our student wellness is safe driving. Throughout the campaigns we have done, I have learned that teaching people how dangerous some of the things they do on the road are is an eye-opener for some people. From a personal standpoint, obeying traffic laws and limiting the amount of distractions while I’m driving are ways I can be a safer driver. This also fits in to helping others become safer drivers because I can lead by example.
Driving has positively and negatively affected my life, and I believe that education about the dangers of driving can help create a more safe world. Teaching friends and family about how to be a more defensive driver and continuing to learn more about driving safety are vital to the mission of saving lives through driver education.
