Texting while driving is one of the most common and risky behaviors a driver can engage in behind the wheel. Texting while driving is equivalent to driving with a blindfold on. In addition, in 49 states in the country, it is prohibited to send text messages while driving. Distracted driving constitutes negligence and if it contributes to an injury in a traffic accident, it could result in civil liability. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the United States. According to NHTSA distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,308 lives in 2022 (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). When texting while driving, you are distracted in three ways: visual, manual, and cognitive. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), texting and driving can have the same consequences as driving under the influence (By AAA staff). A determining factor in road safety education is that there are laws and regulations that people know, understand, and respect. Road safety education should be for both drivers and pedestrians since both must interact on the streets and comply with the rules in different situations. Road education plays an important role since having knowledge of road rules and laws promotes coexistence, tolerance, and respect and at the same time reduces the lack of control on the roads and the large percentage of accidents that occur daily. These types of measures can save lives and prevent all kinds of injuries that can affect people's quality of life. Road accidents represent the eighth cause of death worldwide, and the main cause of death in young people between 18 and 24 years old. Therefore, on the way to counteract these numbers, measures that aim to reduce accidents are a necessity rather than a recommendation. Any precaution taken to avoid traffic accidents is an extra protective measure that is put between the person and the consequences of an atrocious event like this. The significance of reducing accidents is seen in preventive safety measures, which try to notify drivers of potentially dangerous circumstances in order to prevent them from becoming part of an accident. Some ways to reduce the number of driving-related deaths would be to avoid cell phone use behind the wheel, do not drive if you are tired, do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, keep your vehicle in good condition, follow the speed limit, respect traffic rules and laws, plan your route carefully to avoid confusion on the road, be cautious when changing lanes, and avoid conflict on the road. So far, nothing has happened to me behind the wheel, but I do have loved ones who have suffered from distracted drivers or have been distracted drivers. One day my father was driving in a residential area and a driver who was driving in the opposite direction was distracted using his cell phone, went out of his lane, and hit my father which caused my father's car to end up upside down in the middle of the road. When we arrived at the scene of the accident the firefighters told me that if it had not been for the fact that my dad was in a big car he would have died. Another time was two weeks ago when a very good friend of mine who suffers from nomophobia (fear of, or anxiety caused by not having a mobile phone) Was driving using his phone and when he looked up the traffic light was red. He could not stop on time, this caused him to crash into three cars that were in front of him, thank God no one was hurt but he did cause a big traffic accident because he was texting others while behind the wheel, after watching so much news and having seen these accidents through loved ones. Some steps I can take to be a better and safer driver would be to avoid using my cell phone while behind the wheel. Before starting my route, I try to make sure I put the GPS and that I chose the right route I want to take to avoid using my cell phone while driving. Another thing I can do is put my phone on 'Do not disturb', that way I will not see any notifications that can distract me while driving. Additionally, I will start to leave a little earlier, that way I will not feel pressured to speed. Aggressive driving behaviors tend to come out when we are running late or feeling stressed about getting to our destination.
