Proper and engaging drivers’ education is a necessity for all inexperienced drivers, but especially teen drivers. Driving is a huge responsibility and can be a lot to manage for any driver, inexperienced or not. However, for teens it can especially overwhelming, as driving is their first “adult” responsibility. It can be a lot to manage, as there are many aspects of becoming a good driver; knowledge of road signs and traffic laws, defensive driving, driving effectively under weather conditions and road rules, and driving etiquette. These skills can be easily acquired by taking a driving class, the best choice being the driving courses provided by your school. But driving class can teach you more than road knowledge. These classes can also show you how to deal with new emotions that come with driving. My high school provides a driver’s education class, and it is required for graduation. My school does this so students can be educated on the road, and they provide a budget-friendly driving course. It provided the students with 20 hours on the road and the driving range. This way of teaching is extremely beneficial to students, parents, and others on the road. The best part of the driving course is that before you can sign up for the course you need to pass the class with at least 80%. This condition was made so those who take the course understand what is expected of them by the school and the state of Utah. It also is a major help to drive with an instructor you already know is a great bonus!
However, knowing the rules of the road isn’t the only aspect of being a safe driver. Teen drivers are known to be one of the most distracted drivers on the road. This may be due to how many distracting habits and objects there are in or around them. Some of the most distracting aspects in their vehicle are the passengers and their phones. However, passengers can be far more distracting in the car versus a phone. A phone is something that can be put away or out of reach. However, that is not something that can be done with passengers. It is common for young drivers to carpool with their friends very frequently. However, having friends or anyone else in the vehicle can become extremely distracting to unaccustomed drivers. But there is an easy fix, proper education. These courses can teach proper navigation for this distracting habits while still being able to have people in your car.
The idea of driving classes is an excellent choice for any kind of driver even for experienced drivers. For example, if experienced drivers know of distracting habits and want to fix them or if they want to become a better driver! However, these classes are most beneficial for young drivers as there are more habits with this group. I know of many of these habits due to my friends. Driving with my friends has made me realize how distracted many teens get while behind the wheel. This is not only dangerous for those in the car but also those outside of the car, due to these observations drivers’ education courses need to be taught in school. To help teach effective distraction, avoiding or managing tactics. Though teaching these techniques is not a guarantee for full road safety, it still can help towards the progress. This will not only make the roads safe for these unaccustomed drivers but also their passengers and other on the road.
Overall, proper, relevant, and engaging drivers’ education is a necessity to keep these new teen drivers safe on the road. Learning the basics for driving, how to drive, and how to deal with the stress of driving will help contribute towards the teen driver injury and death toll on the road. That is why these skills are important for young driver to learn as not only does it lower the teen injury and death count it can significantly lower the car crash rates overall. Due to the promise of this, drivers’ education classes needs to be provided at high schools nationwide and it would be even better to make it a required class. That way students must learn about street and road safety! These courses are also a budget-friendly alternative, as learning to drive from your school can be incredibly cheaper than going to a third-party driving school. Overall, we need to protect young drivers from the dangers of driving. Required high school classes is a fantastic way to do so as it doesn’t take any extra time, they are cheaper and overall can be a much more engaging experience!
