Most people view drivers ed as a waste of time or just a
boring class needed people have to take before getting their license;
however, this “pointless” class may be the reason someone gets to
live. By teaching young teenagers the rules of the road and how to be
responsible, kids begin to realize the seriousness of being behind
the wheel. Driving is often considered a right other than a
privilege, so drivers ed informs young people that bad
decisions when driving can have serious consequences for yourself and
others. By being realistic with the seriousness of driving, kids can
recognize the affect their actions can have on others. Properly
education these kids can prevent the number of accidental deaths in
the future and spare hundreds of families from a life of sadness.
Some lessons that are taught to prevent these accidents are
completely stopping at stop sign to make sure no one is coming, the
importance of not driving under the influence, and the meaning of
defensive driving vs. offensive driving. Teaching these steps as well
as practicing these steps every time one gets in the car will make
the roads a safer place. Although I have never personally been in an
accident, I have witnessed first hand some driving habits that go
directly against the purpose of this paper. Even some of my close
friends decide to drive under the influence because they are “good
at it” or tend to be more aggressive when driving having only
concern for themselves. It is this selfish behavior that causes
other’s lives to end. Despite my constant pleading, my friends and
family continue to drive irresponsibly; however, this is no excuse.
It my job to look out for those I care about in addition to those
lives that are being put in danger. I need to do a better job at
stopping these events from occurring by doing whatever it takes to
stop them from driving- even if it means losing a friendship. I also
plan to improve these situations my practicing what I preach. I would
consider my self a decent driver, but by making a special effort, I
hope those I care about will catch on to these habits. At the end of
the day, it is not about getting from point A to point B as fast as
possible; it is about getting from one place to another efficiently
while not endangering those around us to do it.
