The Cost of 5 Seconds

Let me ask you a simple question, let's say you're walking down the street not minding your business, I then ask you to look behind you for 5 seconds while walking. Your first thought might be to tell me that's an idiotitc idea, and you're right. You see if you take the time to look behind you even for 5 seconds a thousand things can happen, a skateboard can be in front of you, a person can be turning the corner, a dog can be running towards you. All these things can happen in just a simple 5 seconds. Now if you know looking away while walking is not a great idea just think about doing this while driving. When you're walking the only thing you have to worry about is maybe bumping into someone, but while driving you're not just in charge of just your life but others as well.
Do you wanna hear a common thing people say when they get into a car crash? “If only”. That may not look like much but let's use it in a scenario shall we? If only I saw that car, if only I wasn't looking at my phone, if only I was fast enough. These words can often mean a grim implication if we go further, if only I saw them, if only I wasn't speeding. You must understand you're not just in charge of yourself, you're in charge of a 300 pound vehicle cable of going over 75 miles per hour. Human life is quite fragile and able to be snuffed out very easily.
Have you ever wondered what goes through a person's mind when they hit someone? I can personally tell you it's not that forgiving.Picture that it was a saturday morning and I decided to drive, I waited until the light turned green and then went. Do you know what my mistake was? I didn't wait, as soon as I saw it turn green I went and got hit by someone running a red light. As soon as I saw him I hit the brake only to still hit his car, my mind immediately flushed with both anger and sadness. At first I wasn't angry at him I actually was angry with myself, since I felt like all this could have been avoided if i been patient and waited those extra few seconds when the light turns green I wouldn't have gotten into that car wreck. When I called my parents the only thing I can say was a flimsy “im sorry”. In my mind this was all my fault even though I had a green light in my mind I felt like it was my fault.
This all ties back to the source of my paper, you see we desperately need drivers ed. You pay no mind to this point thinking this doesn't apply to us but it does. You see, we're not the only ones on the road; there's millions of people driving every day. You may be a safe driver but there's thousands of people on the road who drive without the proper knowledge and safety. Let me ask you this even though drivers ed is available to almost everyone we still have thousands of people arrested without a license, you may think it's people who may have forgotten the license or someone with a suspended license, but there's also a portion of teenagers who are driving without going through drivers ed. I have come across multiple people in my life that they think they can drive by themselves with just a permit and think they know everything.
Driving is something that no one can be an expert in no matter how much they drive. You can be driving since the first model t and still not be an expert, there's never a good reason to be texting while driving. You may think you're a good driver but remember the road is not a single person place there's always multiple cars and people crossing in front of you. The 5 seconds it takes just to write a text message can have deadly consequences.Like I said earlier people will not always follow the law if a person crosses in front of you for whatever reason, jaywalking, illegal turn, running a red light. Will you see them? Under normal circumstances you will, but those 5 seconds can change a whole lot. Let me ask you one final question before I let you go on with your amazing driving journey, do you have 5 seconds to spare?
