The Crucial Role of Driver Education in Reducing Traffic Fatalities

Other measures can be taken to reduce the number of deaths caused by car driving. One of these measures is to have the traffic law imposed more intensively. These could be in the stiffer penalties for offenses such as overspeeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving. Raising public awareness on the danger that reckless driving could be through information campaigns, educational programs, and other awareness-raising activities could also help in a big way. It would also be of great help if the road itself could be improved by having better and safer intersection designs, good lighting, proper signs, etc. Finally, technological improvements to the vehicles themselves—including automatic emergency braking systems and lane departure warnings—must be taken into widespread use to provide an additional layer of safety. Personal reflection: I have witnessed irresponsible driving myself. A couple of years ago, I was in a minor car accident caused by a driver who was texting while driving. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, but it did say a lot for 'keeping one's eyes on the road.' Once in a while again, friends or family drive wildly around with no seatbelts or race at very high speeds. These experiences pointed out that education and awareness are continuous processes that need to be exercised so that all drivers are informed about and adhere to safe driving practices.
There are many things that I can do to become a better and safer driver. I will not play with my cellular phone or even the radio while driving; it simply means that I am putting my attention to the road and toward driving. I can also refresh my memory from time to time by reading and practicing the defensive driving techniques so that I may remain prepared against hazards whenever they happen. Thirdly, I update myself constantly with new traffic laws and the new technologies that are brought into vehicles for safety, which can help me become a better driver. Besides, it is a very critical factor to maintain my vehicle well by periodically checking and servicing problems, which relates to safe driving.
Apart from improving my own driving habits, others can be made to become safer on the road. This is going to be realized by leading a good example to friends and members of my family. When they see me abiding by the safe driving standards regularly, probably my actions will be contagious. Other ways include open discussions about the need for safe driving and more so for new drivers by urging them to attend some classes on driver education. It can further be supplemented with, and extended to active promotion of safe driving campaigns, advocate for infrastructure or participate in some awareness campaign within your community, to contribute for these wider efforts towards reducing traffic fatalities.
In other words, driver education is the keystone to reducing mortalities from driving. It forms the basis of a culture of safe driving, whereby a person is empowered with skills and knowledge to drive safely. Further enforcement actions, raising people's awareness, and good infrastructure would also much help in making driving less dangerous. Harrowing experiences which we come across while driving unleash the importance of safe driving. We all can do one's little bit to make our roads a safe drive by first making ourselves a better and safer driver, and then convincing others to be so.
