The Effects of Drunk Driving on a Community

I vividly remember the dark feeling in my school’s hallways during my sophomore year, after finding out an alumni of my high school had passed away due to the recklessness of a drunk driver. Every student and every teacher had a hard time getting through that day. The young man had actually been the designated driver for his friends as they were leaving a party that night. He was completely sober, however, a drunk driver in another car caused his life to end far too soon.
His name was Michael Sot. I did not know him personally, but I knew of the impact he had made on our school. He was cherished by so many people in my community, all parents, faculty, and children. I remember walking into English class the day after his passing. My teacher was a very close friend of the Sot family and was very admirable of Michael. He was crying, sharing stories of Michael during his childhood and how he watched him grow up. It felt surreal, seeing my teacher so vulnerable in front of my entire class. Unfortunately, that is what happens when a drunk driver is put behind a wheel.
To prevent events like these, Drivers Education is extremely important. Not only does it explain the importance of being sober behind the wheel, but it also highlights the importance of driving safely. Michael Sot knew how to be a safe driver because he chose to be sober so he could drive his drunk friends home. Knowing the rules of the road prevents accidents from happening and prevents the loss of a life. To become a better and safer driver one must be aware of their surroundings. It is easy to get distracted while driving, but it is crucial to keep your eyes on the road at all times. Texting and driving is also a leading cause of car accidents in America, along with drunk driving. Speeding on the highway and even local roads can result in a deadly accident if there is a collision. Being a cautious driver will prevent horrible accidents and the loss of precious life, like Michael Sot.
