The good and the bad of driving

The summer of 2018 is when I took Driver’s ED. According to my parents I did not need to have any prior driving experience since apparently, I’d be learning how to drive there, but boy where they wrong. It was clear to me that I was not ready to be out in the streets all alone after my first few drives. Prior to me attending my first Drivers Ed class I never thought about the dangers of driving. To me driving 25 and up miles per hour in a multi-thousand object made up of various metals felt secure. During Drivers Ed I became aware of the fact that driving kills, through the photos of vehicle accidents and the damage passengers suffer. In general, whether its learning how to drive, learning a new math concept, or just trying to improve on anything, practice and experience are key. These are two things that come with Drivers Ed, through driving with a professional to driving more consistently a person can gain better judgement and develop good driving habits. So, this is where Drivers Education comes in reducing deaths, through drivers education people are actually getting hands on experience with driving, through more experience comes good judgement and better driving habits. The younger the people can develop good driving habits the less prone they will become to committing infractions such as speeding and driving while under the influence, which are the main reasons for why driving deaths occur.

The most logical thing to do to prevent or reduce driving related deaths is to simply follow traffic laws. The laws were put into place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other drivers. For example, simple things such as simply wearing a seatbelt (which is a state law) can go a long way when it comes to protecting drivers. Another possibility would be if smartphones could identify when a person is driving and disable themselves so the driver cannot use it, this would provide one less distraction for drivers. I’m aware that iPhone can sense this, but there's a way for users to disable this and it does not work very well.

While I have not personally experienced a car accident, since I’m a teenager myself, I’m consistently exposed to people who text while driving or simply speed and by “people” I mean my friends. It does not only include my friends, some of my older family members developed the habit of talking on the phone.

I think best that I can do is to simply continue following traffic laws. This ensures that I am safe and ensures that I do not put anyone in danger. I feel as if just simply following traffic laws just helps set an example to new drivers on how they should be driving.
