The Impacts of Safe Driving

In the United States alone, there are 222 million licensed drivers as of 2016. A large amount of those on the road have not been through any form of drivers ed classes to help them learn the rules of the road. This means that a very large amount of the drivers in the U.S. are putting themselves and others in danger by not knowing the proper rules of the road. Those who have gone through classes for drivers ed have had decreases in car accidents and law violations, studies show. This point proves that there are many ways to lessen the number of injuries and fatalities related to driving. Not only are schools helping, but certain phone companies and insurance companies are taking steps to make better drivers. Phone companies, such as Apple Inc. have started putting “Do Not Disturb While Driving” into their phones, meaning notifications that could possibly distract the driver will not go through until the driver puts the vehicle in park. Alongside that, Insurance companies such as Progressive have begun rewarding good drivers. Devices such as Snapshot reward good drivers by saving them money based on their driving habits. These attempts to educate, discipline and reward drivers for being safe can lead to a drop in deaths. This correlation would occur because, with more safe drivers and less reckless drivers on the road, there will not be as many accidents. With safe drivers who follow all of the laws, many of the issues we face today will be cut off at the stem— not becoming issues later in life.

Personally, I feel that safe driving is very important since not only the person diving is putting their life in danger, but they are putting other lives in danger as well. Since I’ve begun driving I have realized how much attention needs to be on the road at all times, and how easily one can lose focus on the road. I have not been in a car accident myself, but have been witness to close calls, and people not doing their best while driving. In my driving experience, I have gotten to see other drivers not take all necessary precautions before driving such as wearing seatbelts and turning their headlights on. I have also noticed others not slowing down for when stoplights turn yellow, signaling properly when turning or changing lanes, and sadly using their cellphones while driving. Although not all drivers will respect the rules of the road, it is in my best interest to be safe while driving. This is why I took a drivers ed class, and follow the laws written. I also educate those who are unaware of certain rules and do my best to keep them focused on the road.
