The
Importance of Drivers Ed

Driving.
An action in which I have been anxiously awaiting to participate.
Only recently have I reviewed my permit. This is a big step in my
freedom and comes with many distractions.  I, just like many
other teenage girls my age, have multiple social media pages and love
to surf my phone. The difference is that driving could cause a major
accident and risk many people’s lives. Putting down my phone for a
short amount of time I’m driving helps me to avoid unnecessary
crash scares. Thankfully, I have only been in two minor accidents
none of which anyone was injured but the driver was quite shaken up.
This initial shock factor only lasted for about a day before they
were back to their usual bad habits of using their phone.

 When
I took drivers ed, I was mixed in with a very diverse group
of individuals. They ranged in their race, age, and ethnicity, but
most importantly an interest in the class. I knew most wouldn’t
even show up unless it wasn’t required to drive. Only a few
understood the true importance of education and how crucial it is to
keep other drivers safe. Most sat dazed off on their phones and even
chatting along with a friend beside them. By this mindless action,
they were going to be putting multiple people at risk in the near
future. They weren’t able to listen and understand what is expected
of them and their new privilege.

Driving
is an act that many people take for granted every day. As time
progresses forgetting to turn on your blinker to change lanes,
blowing past a red light, and even just going 10 miles over the speed
limit, doesn’t cross our minds. I am quite new to driving, having
only received my learners permit in December, so I still clearly
remember the rules I learned in Drivers Ed. Those who have been
driving for longer, sometimes need a reminder in order to keep others
safe. Remembering the small technicalities can help prevent
fatalities. Car crashes have shown to be the leading cause of death
among teens and young adults. Constant education and reminders to
follow protocol are necessary for most of our seasoned drivers. When
we educate drivers we prevent avoidable crashes because small factors
can no longer play in as a variable. Therefore, the probability of a
crash because of minor mistakes, that are drilled in during drivers
ed, significantly lowers. Drivers should be willing to know the rules
not only so they don’t have to pay a fine but save a life.
