The importance of driver education in preventing the number of fatalities

The importance of driver education is something many like myself at one point in their young teenage life believe it isn’t very important. However, after careful consideration I came to the conclusion that driver education is vital for the safety of everyone who drives on public roads especially when there are, “more than 38,000 people losing their lives each year” in the United States alone. Good driver education is vital in helping provide a driver with extensive knowledge that they can put to use in their everyday lives on public roads. For instance drivers with good driving knowledge will know, “how to react in hazardous driving scenarios, such as bad weather” Just as I have discovered living in Colorado’s snowy winters, driving in the snow can be hazardous with at times roads being covered to the point where you may not know where any of the road lanes are located. This is an important indication of why driver education is so important in weather conditions especially, since they play a huge role when it comes to driver errors, “Weather acts through visibility impairments, precipitation, high winds, and temperature extremes to affect driver capabilities, vehicle performance (i.e., traction, stability and maneuverability), pavement friction, roadway infrastructure, crash risk, traffic flow, and agency productivity.” Indicating the detrimental effects weather can have on a driver while driving, which is why it is important for a driver to be well educated and prepared for these hazardous situations. Lastly, young drivers such as myself at a certain point, often make mistakes, “One of the biggest mistakes young drivers make is assuming that the vehicle they are driving will operate the same regardless of weather conditions.” This is true since many young drivers who are learning to drive at the moment have poor driving knowledge and often don’t take adequate precaution when driving in bad weather, assuming their car will continue to perform the same as in good weather conditions, putting themselves and others on the road at risk of a fatal accident. In summary, a driver’s education is vital in the safety of those on public roads, drivers with good driving knowledge are less likely to commit fatal errors in everyday driving. As I realized over my time driving and gaining experience, I began to react better in certain situations, much better than when I was learning how to drive.
As a person who drives on public roads and has family members who do as well, taking steps to increase the safety of drivers on public roads is vitally important. Especially when increasing safety precautions aim to reduce the number of fatalities that are caused by diving related incidents. Many of these driving incidents occur due to distracted driving, these incidents typically occur when the driver is multitasking instead of focusing on the road. Multitasking can “include Texting, Eating or drinking, Changing a song, or watching entertainment.”These are examples of multitasking that can distract drivers leading to a potential crash, something of which many drivers such as myself and many others can relate to. Distractions to the driver such as these can potentially lead to fatal driving errors due to the lack of focus on the road. An example of a fatal incident caused by distracted driving occured on January, 12, 2023 when, “A truck driver who Arizona prosecutors said caused a deadly accident because he was watching TikTok while driving” “Five people were killed” In this fatal accident five people were innocently murdered due to a driver who was distracted watching a form of entertainment instead of paying attention to the road. Due to this incident, “Five families are living through the pain of losing a loved one." For this reason I believe steps should be taken to ensure the safety of those who drive on public roads. A few steps we can take to ensure our safety on roads are, “Individuals should avoid using their phones while driving, and refrain from engaging in road rage.” These steps can help protect ourselves and others by preventing drivers from being distracted while driving. In summary, distracted driving is dangerous for the safety of ourselves and the safety of our loved ones who drive on public roads, which is why we should all take the necessary steps in order to reduce the amount of distracted drivers on the road.
As a teenager I have been lucky enough to never have been involved in a car accident. However, I have witnessed a few of my friends as well as some of my family members drive irresponsibly. Most notably my brother I have seen my brother drive recklessly and irresponsibly on multiple occasions. Some of the ways he would drive recklessly would be in multiple instances where he would speed to try and show off on almost any street except for a school zone. On top of all this he would almost always be texting and driving along with watching entertainment videos, at moments hardly even looking at the road. I always thought it was fun when I was growing up, and eventually time went past and I began to start driving myself. I will admit that at times I would drive pretty fast even during a few pulls just to show off. However, soon after I began to believe that there was no point in driving recklessly, nothing good ever comes out of driving recklessly. I began to realize that driving recklessly really just puts your life and the lives of others at risk. Thus I began to drive more responsibly trying to take care of myself and others on the road. Driving responsibly also helped me take better care of my vehicle since driving recklessly also affects your vehicle by putting more strain on it, and repairs aren't cheap. I believe that we can help others drive safer by helping them understand and believe that driving recklessly doesn’t offer anything good out of it, but instead provides continuous life threatening problems for you and others on the road. In summary, overtime I began to believe that driving recklessly was irresponsible and not worth it, although previously when I was growing up I found it to be fun and exciting.
In conclusion, driver’s education is a key essential part of ensuring the safety of everyone on the road. Proper training and knowledge helps drivers avoid mistakes, especially in hazardous conditions like bad weather, and reduce the risk of accidents. Distracted and reckless driving, often fueled by a lack of education or even just poor decision-making, continues to be a leading cause of fatalities. By recognizing the dangers of multitasking behind the wheel and the importance of responsible driving, we can all contribute to making roads safer for ourselves and our loved ones. As I’ve learned through my own experiences, driving responsibly not only protects our own lives but also the lives of others. Ultimately, the more we educate ourselves and others about the risks and responsibilities of driving, the more we can reduce the number of preventable accidents and fatalities, ensuring safer roads for everyone.
