The Importance of Drivers’ Education
Drivers’ education greatly reduces the number of deaths as a result from driving because they not only teach us how to drive, but they also scare us by showing us what happens when people drive irresponsibly and the effects of doing so. That shocks kids learning how to drive so that they will gain the urge to drive responsibly so they can avoid these events. They teach us how to be defensive drivers and being aware of what is going on around us. Being educated on how to drive is so important because if you do not have any knowledge about intersections, stop signs, right of way, signaling, checking your mirrors and shoulder, or awareness of your surroundings and how to react in those situations you have a much higher chance of getting in accidents and driving irresponsibly because they do not know the rules of the road.
Some steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving are to require people who drink to ask someone to drive them home afterwards or pay for an Uber, Lyft, or taxi ride in advance to drinking despite how much they are going to drink. Drivers must enforce putting on a seatbelt before they drive and continue to wear it until the ride is over. We can teach new and old drivers to create a habit of not looking down while they drive. We also enforce laws that are already present and we can be the example for future generations of drivers by making those changes today.
I have fortunately never been in a car accident. My mom a long time ago was at a corner and about to turn and another car hit the corner of my mom’s car. It was not very big, but memorable. She was not hurt at all. I was not in the car at that time. In the past, I would get nervous when my dad drove because he drives a little crazy. He goes in zigzags and parks at a red light and does a lot of other unusual things. He never signals. By the way my entire family and I do not drink. Ever since I was in drivers’ ed, I retaught my dad how to drive normal and responsibly. He drives great now and I am not nervous when he drives anymore. One time my mom, my aunt and I were driving on a sandy beach and there weren’t any people or cars. We hit a ditch that we did not know was there even though we were driving responsively. We were only driving from the picnic bench to the middle of the beach so my aunt decided to not wear her seatbelt. Her head hit the sun visor in the car. Luckily the sun visor was down or else It would have been much worse. She got a concussion and had to go to the nearest hospital. Where we were at was far away from a lot of hospitals, but she got to one just in time. There were no cars around and hardly any people around but that was still an accident.
When I drive I leave my phone in the back seat on silent and I never look down. I also put on my seatbelt before I start the car. I am always looking to see if there are any cars coming before I back out. I make sure to give cars enough space at all times and I follow all road rules and never cheat on them. Some things I could work on are making sure my speed is going the speed limit and not 2-5 mph over like everyone tends to do sometimes. To help others be safer on the road I can, if I am in the car with them, remind them certain things that will help them be safer from other cars as well as some unique tips I have learned. I can also steer clear of cars that I think are not driving safe by letting them pass or getting away from them.
