One crucial aspect of driving that contributes to many car-related deaths is driving under the influence. Whether it is being intoxicated or high, combating this issue this will help reduce the number of deaths. Additionally, there are steps individuals can take every time they get into their car, including securing their seatbelt, removing visible distractions, focusing all their attention on the road, and only driving when they feel calm. Being aware of your surroundings and completely focused on the road in front of you is an extremely important step. One way to ensure you are focused is by not texting and driving. Being aware while driving is more than just keeping your eyes on the road but keeping an eye on all of your mirrors while driving, which is not easy. Not being nervous is an important step. I know the first time I drove alone it was a bit nerve racking and I had to adjust myself into being more comfortable. I know that by simply just being more relaxed and aware will help all new drivers be better drivers. Some important steps can simply just be common sense, such as securing your seatbelt and removing visible distractions.
I have been in a car accident and know people who drive irresponsibility. My car accident was caused by the other driver being distracted by her phone, and she hit the side of my car. Thankfully, it was only a fender bender, and no one was hurt, but it reminded me of the importance of not being distracted by a cellphone while driving. Being a teenger, I know of many people my age who will drive while on their phone, or drive unsafely. I always remind them to be careful but they do not seem to care about the repercussions of distracted driving. Driver education could help them learn and understand how important safe driving is. It was very scary because this was the first time anything like this had ever happened and now I need to be even more aware than before. I also know people who have lost loved ones due to drunk driving incidents and it ruined their lives. Losing someone is something that no one can ever get back and if people knew not to drink behind the wheel and knew of the repercussions, these accidents never would have happened. Many people think that they can handle the alcohol in their system and are able to drive well, but in reality they cannot and some people are forced to learn the hard way sadly and end up hurting those around them.
Some steps I can take to be a better and safer driver, and protect other drivers as well, is to always have my seat belt on and to make sure all my mirrors are properly placed so I have a clear view of my surroundings. Another important step is to always keep my phone and other distractions out of my way. It is also important to always go the speed limit and make sure I do not stray or swerve away from my lane. The importance of understanding basic mechanics is such an important step, such as knowing where the brake and gas is, or how to use wipers and blinkers. Also how to check blindposts and knowing where certain things are. For me driver education was very beneficial in helping me to remember these important steps in safer driving. I hope more people will participate in driver education, take driving more seriously, and continue to drive safely.
