Being distracted and intoxicated while driving is a deadly combination not only for the driver but for the innocent people around them. Distracted driving does not only have to be your eyes or ears distracted, if someone's mind is not in the right place while driving, that could mean anger, despair, or even joy can distract someone enough to cause a tragedy. In my brother's case, not only was he severely intoxicated, but he was also not in the right headspace to create a safe driving environment for the people around him. Driver education classes have greatly reduced crash rates by 4.3%, and they have made me a better, safer driver. The concept of defensive driving taught in driver education creates a different perspective on even people who are not distracted or under the influence can help decrease the chances of causing accidents in the future. Even though many accidents are not life-threatening, why would anyone take the chance of it being fatal, especially if there are methods you can use to prevent it?
Suggestions for safe driving include: avoiding long drives at night, buckling up if you are planning on impairing yourself, getting a friend to be the designated driver, putting your phones away, and turning to silent mode. If you are driving a long distance, take frequent breaks/stops, and take a small walk to fight fatigue. Improving emergency response systems can help reduce the number of deaths if a crash were to happen. Paying them more to improve the training and communication systems can ultimately create a better response to emergency crashes. Another way to prevent the number of deaths related to driving is by improving road design and maintenance. Adding more light, clearer signage, and barriers to prevent head-on collisions, maintaining the roads to prevent hazards that include potholes, and ensuring proper drainage to reduce hydroplaning. Legislation and policy changes can advocate for policies that promote driver and road safety, such as graduated driver licensing for new drivers, mandatory seat belt laws, and stricter penalties for traffic violations. You can also create or be a part of public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks of distracted driving, the importance of wearing seatbelts and the dangers of speeding. Drivers themselves can ensure proper safety while driving by keeping up with maintenance on their vehicles to create a better driving environment.
In conclusion, enhancing driving safety is a multifaceted issue that requires a collaborative effort from you, your community, and government. By prioritizing a comprehensive driver education, we can instill safe driving habits from the beginning. Stricter enforcement of traffic laws ensures that drivers adhere to safety standards, reducing the likelihood of accidents. Improvement in road designs and maintenance creates safer diving conditions, while advanced vehicle safety features provide additional protection. Public awareness campaigns play a crucial role in changing attitudes and behaviors toward driving, emphasizing the importance of awareness and responsibility on the road. Furthermore, enhancing emergency response systems ensures that those involved in accidents receive timely and effective care, maybe saving lives. Finally, legislative and policy changes can provide a robust framework that supports all of these efforts creating a safer driving environment for everyone around the country. By addressing these key points, we can greatly reduce the number of driving-related fatalities and create a culture of safety and responsibility on our roads. The path toward safer roads is ongoing, but with concerted effort and commitment, we can make substantial progress and save countless lives.
