Some steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving would be making sure you are sober. If you are intoxicated while driving the road is a very unsafe place for you, and the people around you on the road. You may see things that aren't there or do things you shouldn't do while driving. This could be bad because you could swerve and such and maybe cause an accident or swerve others off the road. Other things you can do are make sure you are not distracted. Some examples would be with things like others in the back of your car or even being on your phone. There are things in the settings of your phone to make sure that you aren't getting notifications or your phone lighting up to make sure you are one hundred percent not distracted. Some other things would be to make sure that everyone in the car has their seatbelts on because if there were things like getting in an accident they would be as safe as possible.
Going to something like a driver's education class is very helpful because it can teach you lots of things such as all of the rules and regulations for the road. They can teach you from things as easy as turning on your blinker to things like what to do when you have lost control on something such as icy terrain.
I have been in two minor car accidents in my lifetime. The first time was when my family was driving in Virginia and a deer jumped from the side of the road into the path of the car and we hit it. My mother was driving that day, and I learned now from observation from her that you stay calm, and make sure it was safe to pull over before checking the car. The second time was when my family was waiting at a stop light and the lady behind us was not paying attention and she released her foot off the break, and she rear ended us. The woman told the police that she had gotten distracted by her dog and let go of the break. Even a few seconds of distraction can lead to any type of accident. Even with mere seconds of just looking at her dog she rear ended somebody and had to pay to fix the damage.
When you are first starting out driving with your learners permit you can do lots of practicing to help be prepared for the many instances that can happen while driving. It is important to get practice driving in places like the rain, the fog, the dark, different terrains, snow (if there is any in your area).
Some steps you can take to be a better driver are you can practice even when you have a license. There are always new circumstances and things that can happen when you are driving for years to come. Make sure you are always paying attention, never even letting yourself get distracted for even two seconds. Two seconds of your vision being taken off the road can cause an accident. Anything can happen in literal seconds. There are always little distractions that can happen like passengers messing around, or things going on outside. A lot of the time people will end up hitting somebody on the highway if there is an accident that has already happened because they are so focused on the accident that has happened that they are not paying attention to their actual driving. Always make sure that you are in good condition to drive as well. If something like you are sick and your eyes are watering a bunch and you can't see, that would not be good for you to drive. Or if you have to drive and you need glasses, but you don't have them with you right now then you should not be driving. And even with something as little as being super tired, if you fall asleep for even a few seconds while driving something could happen and you could get in an accident. So always make sure you are fully well to be driving.
Another thing you can do to make sure you are being safe for yourself and others while driving is constantly checking your surroundings. Whether it be on the highway or even in your neighborhood. Always check your mirrors when doing things such as switching lanes or backing up because you wouldn't want to run into someone because you didn't check to see if they were there. And for neighborhoods just make sure you are looking up to every driveway to make sure that if there's a kid that runs out into the road, so you don't hit them.
