We
have all seen the outdated videos in our drivers ed class referring
to and explaining the tragedies that have happened while behind the
wheel. In a way it almost desensitizes the viewer when faced with ten
straight days of watching different videos. Driving is a privilege
for everyone but when you sit behind the wheel of a car
responsibility falls on your shoulders. Yet we forget the
responsibilities in due time as many teens text or check snapchat
when behind the wheel. Increased awareness of distracted driving will
lead teens to continue to have a reality check periodically. A step
that is important to limit the number of deaths is do not have your
phone in reach. This doesn’t mean put it on the other side of the
car and then try and reach over a seat to check a notification. It
means turn on silent and don’t even think about it until at the
destination. If it is an important call or text, pull over in a gas
station or in a safe area to be able to check that vital
notification. While I have not personally been in a car crash, I have
friends who have. My friend has had 4 or 5 crashes one resulting in a
serious injury but passed his exam with a perfect mark. I tend not to
put my phone out of reach and tend to use it to skip songs. Putting
that phone out of reach will help me become more aware of other
drivers and can help me be more aware if another driver is being
irresponsible so I can avoid them and not get in a crash.
