The Reality of East Tennessee Roads

Driving is something a lot of people do every day without thinking much about it, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. I think driver education is important because it teaches people about protecting yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road. When people are properly educated about driving, they are more likely to make safer choices and avoid mistakes that can lead to serious accidents or even death. A good driver is a person who understands why those rules are in place and how one careless decision can affect many lives.

Driver safety and respecting the road are even more important to me because I see unsafe driving all the time where I live in East Tennessee. I see people doing the wrong thing on the road every single day, whether it is speeding, texting, not using turn signals, not knowing how a four way stop sign works, or just acting like the rules do not apply to them. I also see wrecks far too often, sometimes more than one in a single day. It makes it clear that driving is not something to take lightly. In my state, driver education is not required, and I think that shows in the number of people who seem unprepared or careless behind the wheel. In my opinion, too many people think they can just figure it out as they go, but driving safely takes more than just getting behind the wheel and learning how to operate the vehicle. 

I am grateful that my parents made me take driver's ed and behind the wheel training, because I truly believe it made me a better and safer driver. It taught me the basics, but more importantly, it taught me how serious driving really is. I learned how to be more aware, more patient, and more careful, and I know that training gave me habits that help keep me safe every time I get in the car. Defensive driving has also saved me from a lot of situations I could not control. I have had plenty of people cut me off or pull out too fast, and because I was paying attention, I was able to react before anything happened. I have also had to avoid hitting deer, which is something that happens often where I live. All of those situations reminded me that being alert can make a huge difference. Even when other drivers are careless, defensive driving gives me a better chance of avoiding danger.

There are several steps that can help reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One of the biggest is making sure driver education is taken seriously and teaches more than just how to pass a test. People need to learn about distractions, speed, alcohol, seat belts, and how quickly things can go wrong when a driver is careless or not paying attention. Defensive driving is also really important because it helps people stay alert and prepared for what others might do. On top of that, drivers need to take personal responsibility by putting their phones away, slowing down, wearing seat belts, and never driving under the influence. Small choices like these can quite literally save a life. It only takes one second of distraction or one bad decision for a situation to become life changing.

Another important step is for people to realize that safe driving starts with mindset. If someone thinks they are too good of a driver to get into an accident, that is already dangerous. Safe drivers know they cannot control everything, but they can control their own choices. That means staying calm, being patient, and not letting emotions take over while driving. Road rage, impatience, and trying to rush are all things that can lead to serious problems. I think people also need to understand that driving safely is not just about protecting themselves. It is about being responsible for the people riding with them and for everyone else nearby. That responsibility should matter every single time someone gets behind the wheel.

I have seen how serious unsafe driving can be. I have been around people who drove irresponsibly, and it made me realize how fast a normal drive can turn dangerous. It made me more aware that driving is something you cannot take lightly. One bad decision can affect not just the driver, but everyone in the car and everyone around them. Even if nothing happened in that exact moment, it still left an impression on me because it showed how quickly things could have gone wrong. Those experiences made me realize that being careless on the road is never worth the risk.

The best way I can be a safer driver is by staying focused and making smart choices every time I get behind the wheel. That means no phone use, no speeding, no distractions, and always paying attention to what is happening around me. I can also make sure my car is safe and in good condition, because being responsible includes taking care of the vehicle too. My dad has taught me the importance of checking fluid levels, making sure wipers and tires are in good condition, and how to change and check oil. I can help others be safer by leading by example. Even simple conversations can make people think twice about the way they drive. I do not think helping others has to be a big thing or portrayed in a judgemental way. Sometimes it is just about being the person who speaks up when something unsafe is happening.

To me, safe driving is really about respect. It is respect for life, for the people in your car, and for everyone else on the road with you. Driver education matters because it helps build that mindset, and that can save lives. Driving may seem like a normal part of life, but it should never be treated like something ordinary. I see nearly everyday in my town how things can turn out when people do not drive carefully and with respect. I would love to see mandates about driver’s ed and behind the wheel change in my state, and plan to write to our representatives about this.
