2025 Driver Education Round 1
The Reality of Reckless Driving

For as long as I can remember, the idea of getting into a car spiked my anxiety. Throughout my childhood, I was involved in various accidents caused by reckless driving. The first crash was the most memorable and traumatizing. On this day, my mother, sister, and I were about to leave when I noticed something was off. My mother’s face had a familiar look, one I had come to fear. I could tell she was overmedicated by her slow movements and distant expression. However, I was too young to take control of the situation or stop what was about to happen, but I had a bad feeling.
As we drove, I carefully watched her eyes in the rearview mirror. My eyes shifted back and forth, my heart racing. I tried to keep her engaged by forcing a conversation, but no amount of talking could keep her awake. As we went eighty miles per hour on the interstate, I watched her drift off and fall asleep. We crashed into the side of the road and were hit by three other vehicles from behind. The force ripped my seatbelt from across my chest, out the window, and onto the next lane. I could not feel anything, and I could not move. All I could do was scream for help. Moments later, an ambulance arrived, pulling my mother, sister, and me from the wreckage, every one of them shocked we were alive. It should have ended there, but my mother’s addiction continued, and so did the accidents.
No one should have to endure the trauma my sister and I experienced. Truthfully, most automobile accidents, like the one my family and I suffered, are preventable. Making responsible choices and enforcing stricter safety measures could save so many lives. Steps can be taken to reduce the lives taken in car accidents, like not driving under the influence, being tired, or emotionally distressed. If you feel tired, pull over or ask someone else to drive. It is not worth risking the lives of others or yourself. Do not use your phone or look away from the road while driving. Engaging in these distractions for even a second can be life-changing. Follow laws and the speed limit. Speeding can increase the severity of accidents and reduce your reaction time. Take your time, especially in unfamiliar areas or under extreme weather conditions. Wear your seat belt. My seatbelt saved my life, and it could save yours, too.
Beyond personal responsibility, we need stricter laws and better road infrastructure to deter this reckless behavior. Stricter enforcement is essential for DUI’s, speeding, and even distracted driving. Holding those who break the law accountable will discourage others from committing the same crimes. Strengthening laws and improving roads can make an extreme difference in preventing needless deaths.
I have taken steps to improve my driving and ensure my safety, passengers, and others on the road. To manage my anxiety and strengthen my skills, I participated in driving school after passing the written driving test. This program reinforced the importance of staying alert and abiding by traffic laws. Additionally, it helped with my anxiety on the road. I stay focused, use signals to communicate my actions, follow the speed limit, and encourage others to do the same. I never drive under the influence or fatigued. The steps I have taken ensure the safety of my passengers and me. The decisions I make behind the wheel are a conscious effort to protect myself and those around me.
Driving safely is not just about protecting yourself it is about protecting others. My past experiences have encouraged my passion for advocating driver safety, and I urge others to do the same. Do not take chances, drive recklessly, or put your loved ones in danger. Automobile crashes remain one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and most of them are preventable. Making responsible choices, following safety guidelines, and promoting safe driving habits can help create a safer road for future generations. Together, we can prioritize safety and stop these preventable tragedies.
