Driving is a big responsibility for an individual and is not something that comes to us naturally. Like almost everything we do, we first have to learn how to do it through trial-and-error. Which is driver education exists to teach individuals the proper and safe way of driving. With driver education, individuals will learn how to control a vehicle and maneuver on the road. It also helps reduce the likeliness of being involved in an accident and potentially injuring themselves or another individual. Driving education teaches an individual how to make a proper stop, putting on blinkers when making right or left turns, following the speed limit, the meaning of signs posted, etc. Without driver education, people wouldn’t be aware of the various driving rules that exist. If people are not aware of the road rules, accidents can happen, and those accidents may result in the death of an individual.
Steps that can be taken to reduce the likeliness of deaths related to driving are various ones. Drivers must commit to driving responsibly, which means no playing races, drunk driving, driving under the influence of any drug, etc. Drivers and passengers should always wear their safety belts. They should get into the habit of putting on their safety belt as soon as they get into the car. People should always stay within the speed limit. Teenagers today like to play races with friends or just random people so they can show off. However, this often causes the driver to eventually lose control over the car because they cannot come to a complete stop quickly. No phones allowed on the road; distracted driving is a significant issue that causes accidents on the road. Today’s society can’t live without their phone, so they feel like they have to check it every minute. People should make it a habit to put their phones away and not use it unless they have to for an emergency.
I have experience of being in a car accident with a family member. This was a very traumatic experience because the person who crashed into us, unfortunately, passed away. Although my cousin was driving responsibly, this was an experience with a lesson. One vehicle's driver can be driving safely, but another person who isn’t driving safely can cause an accident. Therefore, when on the road, we should always be aware of our surroundings.
Steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver is to be a responsible driver. Always be aware of my surroundings, not going over the speed limit, never driving under the influence, and, most importantly, not being a distracted driver. It is easy to say I will do all of these things, but actions are what matters. As drivers, we should know that all of our actions have consequences, which can either be good or bad. It’s up to us if they are good or bad.
