Drivers’ education and its relation to reducing the number of deaths due to driving cannot be overstated. In this essay, I will explore the history, key components, and various perspectives on this critical issue. I will also dive into my life and share my experiences in understanding that educated drivers result in safer roads. I will also discuss that there is a way to improve road safety.

According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged five through twenty-nine. The goal is to teach young drivers the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a vehicle safely. Over the years, driver education has adapted to the incorporation of new technology and teaching methods.

I have been in one car accident that changed my life forever. In high school, I would fall asleep in most classes. I thought the issue was waking up early for band rehearsal and going to bed late from sports-related practices and homework. My family and I worked around this issue and tried to resolve it with better time management skills. When I was sixteen, I received my learner's permit and began driving to sports events with the supervision of my mother.



The day of my accident I raced for my sponsors. This was an all-day event that led to exhaustion. Excited as I was to drive, I asked my mother if I could drive home. She agreed and we were on our way home. About fifteen minutes away from our home I realized that I began to feel very tired. I thought that I was able to make it, but unfortunately, I fell asleep driving behind the wheel. My mother was on her phone, distracted, noticing nothing. I crossed three lanes of traffic crossing through a driveway, jumped a fence, and crashed into a water ravine.



I woke up in a panic, upside down with my mother by my side crying and on the phone with the police. We were able to get everything resolved, however, I still had the issue of falling asleep every chance available. We went to the doctor and had a sleep scan done. The doctors told me that my body had obstructive sleep apnea due to severely enlarged tonsils. During that time, I was able to receive surgery and fix my issue.



In my case, my mother and I are extremely lucky to be alive due to seat belts and airbag deployment systems. I think it is important to view this story as an incident in disregarding human instinct. I knew that there was something wrong. The courage to speak up was not an ability that I had as a person yet. I think that a program that can detect these sorts of issues whether that be something like a PAR+Q or a physical test regarding bodily functions should be mandatory.



A step that I can take to be a better and safer driver and help others do the same is to make the facts known. Recommending defensive driver courses and providing resources on safe driving practice. As well as encouraging friends and family members to prioritize safety on the road. By educating others about the importance of safe driving, I can help raise awareness and promote a culture of responsibility among drivers. Another responsibility that is extremely important is to attend regular checkups with your doctor. Overall, by taking steps to become a better and safer driver yourself, practicing the techniques setting a good example for others, and sharing information with those around you.
