The Sport of Volleyball

There are many sports for kids to participate in now a days. When I was
younger, I was very much into soccer, I loved running around and
kicking a ball. Things started to shift though when I approached
middle school and soccer wasn’t offered for me to play at the
school. At this point, I still wanted to be active, but I had to
choose a different sport. That is when I discovered the sport of
volleyball and fell in love with it. I am now currently a high school
senior and been playing the sport of volleyball since that point on.
I have chosen to help my club volleyball by volunteering to help
teach younger girls the sport of volleyball and how to play it. I
chose to do this because I love seeing the faces of the girls light
up when they finally get their first perfect pass or their first hit
over the net. During the summer, I put in about 15 to 20 hours a
month, doing 3 hours a day for the different types of volleyball
camps. When it is club season though, I will come 2 hours in advance
of mine every Monday and Wednesday, so about 10 hours a month. My
responsibilities as a volunteer is making sure all these girls get
the instruction during these periods of time to develop good habits
to play the sport of volleyball. I would say my biggest challenge
while trying to teach these girls is them listening to me and
comprehending what I am saying. Sometimes they don’t listen totally
to what I say and develop bad habits which will affect them down the
long road. I think what truly puts a smile on my face at the end of
the day is seeing these girls forget about everything else in their
lives that is negative and give it their all when playing. I love
seeing them get so pumped when they finally get that block over the
net, or that perfect pass to their setter. I truly relate to this so
much because I was the same way when I was their age(s). I have
learned a lot from this way of volunteering, it has showed me that
volleyball means a lot to these girls and it will be with them for
the rest of their lives.
