As for how the number of driving-related fatalities can be reduced, I think this can be divided into two main areas. At the individual level, allowing time for travel in advance helps to reduce the risk of impatient driving. Plenty of time will enable drivers to stay calm and focused by avoiding speeding or engaging in risky behaviors because they are in a hurry. Driving in a civilized manner and not using the horn indiscriminately are important measures to reduce road rage and traffic conflicts and maintaining courtesy and patience can create a harmonious driving environment. In addition, it is vital to maintain a good mental state and avoid fatigue driving. Driving for long hours or in a state of exhaustion significantly increases the risk of accidents, so regular rest and adequate sleep are essential to ensure driving safety. Road safety can be promoted at the government level through various measures. One effective way is to place Hawaii-like signage on roads that read, “The accident on this stretch of road occurred x days ago,” a psychological cue that can motivate drivers to stay safe on the road. The government should also promote traffic safety education through social media and short video platforms, using vivid examples and educational content to raise public awareness of traffic safety, especially among young people. It is equally important to raise training requirements and ensure that drivers receive adequate training before obtaining driver's licenses, including training on night driving and adverse weather conditions, which will help produce more qualified and defensive drivers.
I have a personal experience of being involved in a rear-end accident due to exhaustion. I had slept late the night before and was in poor spirits the next day, the braking maneuver was too urgent, and I did not maintain an adequate safety distance. Moreover, the car I was driving was not one I was familiar with, and not understanding the strength of the brakes also contributed to the accident. This experience made me realize that when driving, I should not only pay attention to the vehicle in front of me but also observe the overall traffic flow and anticipate the situation further ahead to deal with potential risks in advance. Brave driving is also a common risk. Take my father as an example, he is in his fifties, his eyesight has deteriorated due to presbyopia, and he is not as physically fit as he was when he was younger. Although he has accumulated a wealth of driving experience in China, his driving in the U.S. sometimes seems unsafe due to different road rules and circumstances. This reminds us that even experienced drivers should adjust their driving habits to different environments. And they need to face up to their own physiology, even fathers should be “softened” sometimes.
Being a better and safer driver is not just a slogan, it's an ongoing endeavor. It's important to stay on top of new traffic laws, and regular driving lessons and advanced courses can improve defensive driving and resilience skills. Staying focused while driving is key - put down your cell phone and focus on the road, and reducing distractions will ensure safety. Learning from the experiences of others, especially the stories of those who have had accidents, is a great way to improve your driving behavior. Finally, care about those around you. When a friend or family member appears tired or depressed, offering support by suggesting they take a break or drive in their place can effectively reduce potential risks. Such care and reminders not only protect them but also make the roads safer for everyone.
Improving road safety and reducing traffic fatalities is a shared responsibility that requires individual and societal efforts. As responsible and careful drivers, we must not only be able to protect ourselves, but also be able to take responsibility for contributing to the well-being of others on the road, which is the most important quality.
