March
24, 2017 I wake up like any other day and get ready to go to school.
I get up, eat breakfast, and head out the door. As I arrive to school
every thing seems normal until about 1st
period when we got the news. Everyone’s favorite teacher from
middle school was found dead in a single-car car crash on the way to
school. A distraction, presumably a cell phone, had caused him to
drive off the side of the highway down in between the bridges of the
north and southbound highways. Everyone who had known him loved him
and enjoyed being in his classroom, as he was jus the brightest,
happiest guy everyone knew, and none of us will ever get to see him
one last time.

Getting
your driver’s license is one of the biggest milestones in a
person’s life, but most people are unaware of the major
responsibility operating and driving a vehicle comes with. Driver
education is imperative for everyone to understand the consequences
of driving with distractions. Drivers ed allows the opportunity
for young teens and adults to learn the importance of focusing on the
road without interference. The more everyone can understand this, the
safer they will be.

The
biggest distraction for every driver, myself included, is their
precious cell phone. In order to become a safer and better driver, I
constantly remind myself that the text CAN wait. When I am in the car
with others, I have them hold my phone while I am driving so I don’t
fall for the temptation, and vice versa. If I am a passenger I kindly
remind them that it is dangerous, and I offer to type for them. While
I am aware that this is not the only distraction while driving, it is
a major one. Without the distraction of a mobile device, the risk of
death significantly decreases. Whenever you get the urge to just take
a little peek, think about all of the other lives you are putting at
risk while selfishly distracting yourself from the road, and remember
the text CAN wait.
