After having my license for just over a year, I have learned the importance of taking driving seriously. Shortly after I received my license, I found myself at the end of a three-car pileup. Luckily, everyone’s seatbelts were on, so no one was injured. It is frightening that from the time it took me to look at the radio and change it a couple of stations, I was smashed into the back of a Kia Soul. It only took a matter of a few seconds of distracted driving that caused me to damage two other people’s cars and my car. Although this wreck was terrifying, it has taught me the importance of awareness when you drive. Now, when I get in a car, I do not even think to do anything that distracts me. I turn my radio on before I start driving, I pay attention to the road at all times, and I most importantly wear my seatbelt. Although these things sound like common sense, people who do not do these things end up as a death statistic. The simple steps of wearing a seatbelt, not being on your phone, not messing with things in the car, not driving under the influence, and paying attention to the road the whole time are essential to reducing the number of deaths from driving. Driving is dangerous, and when people understand the consequences, everyone on the road will be safer. In addition to these things, paying attention to drivers’ education is important as well. The information gained in driver education teaches you how to stay safe on the roads to prevent accidents. For this reason, if people keep in mind the things they learned in drivers’ education everyone will be safer on the roads. Additionally, educating the public on the effects of their distracted driving is crucial to reducing deaths from driving. If the public is aware that their habits could add to the statistics that 314 more people die in a car accident in a year than the total amount of people that died in the Korean War, people will be scared into changing their driving habits. Driving seems simple, but if someone makes one wrong move, then many people could end up hurt and dead. This is why it is important to remember your education and create a serious attitude towards driving. Essential, to prevent deathly driving, people need to know the consequences of their driving and take accountability for how they drive.
