The Yellow Plane: A Story of Safe Driving

My grandfather had just finished his shift at Flood’s Towing and Recovery Center when he decided to spend time with a few friends at a bar. Before heading there, he stopped to buy a yellow toy plane for my father, a small yet meaningful gesture of love and care. My papaw Darryl eased his addiction, allowing alcohol to wrap its rotted hands around his judgement. Before leaving the bar that night, he called my father from a pay phone, asking him to wait outside when he arrived home. It was a moment that should have been just another ordinary night, a father returning home to his family. However, it would turn into a night that changed our family forever. On his way home, my grandfather lost control of his truck on a curve, crashing into a cow pasture. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and because of this, he was thrown through the back window of his truck, dying instantly. The loss was not just a tragic accident; it was an event that rippled through generations. My father, waiting outside just as his dad had told him to, witnessed the entire accident unfold before his young eyes. Standing on the front porch of his house, my father experienced firsthand a tragedy that many people wouldn’t be able to survive. The emotional toll of that moment would stay with him forever. To make matters even more heartbreaking, my grandmother, who was heavily pregnant at the time, was so overcome with shock and grief that she went into labor later that night. She gave birth to my uncle the very next day, welcoming new life into the world while simultaneously mourning the loss of her husband.
This story is a painful reminder of why safe driving is essential. A single moment of lost control, a single decision to not wear a seatbelt, can lead to irreversible consequences. Seatbelts are one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent fatalities in car accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of death by 45% in passenger cars and by 60% in light trucks. Had my grandfather been wearing his seatbelt, there is a chance he might have survived the crash and been able to give my father that yellow plane. Beyond personal safety, responsible driving also includes making sound choices before getting behind the wheel. Driving under the influence, excessive speeding, and reckless behaviors increase the risk of accidents. Alcohol impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and significantly reduces the ability to operate a vehicle safely. If my grandfather had not been drinking before driving, he may have been able to navigate the curve safely and make it home to his family that night.
The impact of one person’s driving decisions can affect entire families and communities. In my family’s case, my grandfather’s accident left a lifelong emotional scar on my father, who had to endure the trauma of witnessing his father’s death at a young age. My grandmother was left to raise a newborn and another child on her own, all while grieving her husband. These are the kinds of consequences that no family should ever have to endure. My father’s trauma radiates through everyday actions. As my brother and I first learned to drive, he experienced frequent moments of heightened anxiety. Each day, he would beg that we would drive safely and to the best of our ability.
Every driver has a responsibility not only to themselves but also to their passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians. Taking simple precautions—such as wearing a seatbelt, obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, and never driving under the influence—can save lives. We must learn from tragedies like my grandfather’s to remind ourselves that every decision we make on the road carries weight. Safe driving is not just about rules and regulations; it is about protecting the people we love and ensuring that we make it home to them at the end of each day. It is a lesson my family learned the hardest way possible, and one I hope others take seriously before it is too late.
