I have had the experience of being in a car accident twice in my life. When I was younger, I was driving with my older sister. We were stopped a red light and my sister decided to check her phone. When the light turned green, I told her, but she did not look up before moving the car. We drove forward and accidentally rear-ended the car in front of us. This was the first time I had been exposed to irresponsible driving. Later in my life I had another experience of unresponsible driving that was my own fault. I was pulling out of a fast-food restaurant parking lot and got distracted by my passenger. Instead of ensuring it was completely safe for me to proceed I pulled forward and was t-boned by another car. This time the car accident was my own fault and I realized that I had not been responsible in my own driving. This is when I determined to learn how to be a safer and more defensive driver.
The first step was to receive driver's education. The more knowledge that is available the better driver I would be. So, I talked to my parents about how they had learned to be defensive driver. They helped me remember all of things I had to do to be a more defensive driver. Such as be careful of other drivers, be considerate on the road, and stay vigilant. The lessons I learned from them helped me back on the right path when driving. I realized that it was more important to arrive safely then to worry about my phone, or my passenger, or my destination. The only thing that mattered was that moment of driving right then and there and trying to keep everyone on the road safe. Now that I had learned these skills from my parents it was time to put them into action on the road.
When driving it is very important to remember to be a defensive driver. This means being vigilant of all the cars on the road and ensuring everyone’s safety. Some of the first steps are the most basic. Always drive the speed limit. That limit was put there for a purpose to help protect drivers from driving recklessly down the road. The second is to be courteous of other drivers. When driving it is very important to not only worry about someone’s own personal wellbeing but caring for everyone on the road with them. Being courteous to other drivers can help preserve relationships on the road, prevent accidents, and stop road rage. Finally, it is important to stay off of phones. One of the most dangerous undertakings a driver can commit is being on their phone on the road. This diverts their attention away from the road and the other drivers around them. This is super dangerous because it means the driver has no control over what they are doing. When a driver cannot control their vehicle, it stops being a useful tool and becomes a dangerous weapon. So, the most important thing for drivers to remember is to remain off their phones and pay attention to what they are doing on the road. By doing this they will keep not only themselves but other drivers on the road safe.
Driving is a wonderful privilege that people are given, but that privilege must not be taken for granted. When a privilege is used irresponsibly it can be revoked, if need be, to keep people safe. The two times I go in a car accident I remember feeling horrible because I knew that something had been done wrong and steps could have been taken to avoid it. Once I made the realization that I needed to do something about it I began to act. I began to educate and later re-educate myself on what it meant to be a responsible driver. The three most important of which can be narrowed down in three steps. First always drive the speed limit; driving the speed limit protects everyone on the road so no one drives recklessly. Second be courteous to other people on the road; when drivers are courteous to one another it helps everyone drive safe and get to their destination quicker. Finally, to stay off cellphones when driving. Being on a phone can lead to distraction and loss of control of a vehicle, and that is the fastest way to get someone hurt. Educating and remembering these three rules can keep everyone safe on the roads and create a better driving experience for all.
