2024 Driver Education Round 3
Why I drive Safety and Why you should to: The importance of Educating drivers to drive safe!

When my dad was a senior, he had a serious car accident. He had spent the day at the beach with his girlfriend (who’s now my mom), and on the way home, he fell asleep at the wheel. His car flipped over multiple times on the highway, and it’s a miracle that he survived, and it happened after he dropped my mom off, because the passenger side of the car was completely caved in. Knowing that this happened to my dad, seeing the pictures of the car, made me nervous about driving, but it also made me see how important driver’s education is.
Driver’s education helps teach young people, like me, the right way to drive, so we can be safe on the road. There are a lot of dangers out there, other cars, bad weather, distractions (like my phone!), and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Driver’s ed gives the tools to understand these dangers and avoid them. In my dad’s case, he fell asleep because he was really tired, and driver’s education teaches us about things like drowsy driving. It’s not just about knowing how to steer the car; it’s about knowing when you shouldn’t even be behind the wheel. If my dad had that if you feel like you’ve fallen asleep, that you have more than likely have fallen asleep a few times without even knowing it, and how risky it was to drive when he was that tired, he might have pulled over and taken a break, and maybe the accident wouldn’t have happened.
I’m not going to lie, I felt pretty nervous about learning to drive. My dad’s accident is always in the back of my mind. What if I make a mistake? What if something goes wrong? These are the kinds of thoughts that make learning to drive feel like a big deal. But that’s where driver’s education comes in. In driver’s ed, you get to practice driving in a safe way. You’re not just thrown out there on the road without help. You learn with a trained instructor who knows how to guide you and correct your mistakes before they turn into real problems. This made me feel better because I know I’ll have the chance to build my confidence slowly.
One of the most important things drivers education teaches is defensive driving. This means learning how to be extra careful and ready for anything that might happen on the road. It’s not just about reacting to problems; it’s about avoiding them before they happen. For example, if you see someone driving erratically, defensive driving teaches you to stay calm and give them space instead of panicking. My dad taught me a few things, in unique ways to learn this. First, he would cover the rear view mirror every so often and ask me “who’s behind you? How many cars, how close, what colors?” He especially like to do it after intersections. He taught me that knowing who’s behind you can keep you safe. He would also make me look both ways before going through an intersection to look for cars going really fast. That way if I say a car going too fast, that might run a red light or stop sign, I could react safely.
It’s not just driver’s ed that’s important. Having supportive parents makes a difference too. My parents are a big part of why I take driving seriously. My dad’s accident has made him extra cautious when it comes to teaching me and my sister about driving. He and my mom always remind us to pay attention, avoid distractions, and make good decisions when we’re behind the wheel. When I started practicing driving, I knew my parents would be right there with me, helping me learn the ropes. Practicing with them, in addition to my driver’s ed instructor, gave me the chance to gain more experience and get more comfortable.
In the end, driver’s education isn’t just about passing a written driving test or getting a license. It’s about learning how to keep yourself and others safe. I now feel confident because I’ve gone through the program, and I’m better prepared to avoid accidents like the one my dad had.
