Why
take the risks?
Every
year, tens of thousands of innocent lives are stolen because of
driving fatalities and accidents, and they injure millions more. A
better safety education of the driver could have prevented many of
these accidents. Educating drivers (especially new ones) is one of
the most important ways the public can help to reduce the number of
deaths because of driving. One step that everyone can and should take
to reduce the number of deaths is to use media presence to show the
casualties that are happening. Many individuals don’t understand
the dangers of unsafe driving until something happens to them or a
loved one. By presenting the reality in the media, it shows unsafe
driving as a reality that could happen to anyone and may encourage
drivers to practice safer driving habits. Another factor of unsafe
driving is the use of phones while driving. Not only does it put the
driver in danger, but it puts the surrounding cars in danger. We can
take many steps to fix this problem: drivers should put their phone
out of reach to prevent temptation; drivers can also make a playlist
of songs beforehand instead of trying to find a song to play while
driving. Although I am lucky enough to have nobody in my family
impacted by a car accident, it affected an old friend named Eryn from
elementary school. She moved to Indiana and became good friends with
a girl there. About two years ago, Eryn’s friend’s family was
driving on the highway when they hit a deer. They pulled off to the
side of the road and as they waited in the car for a sheriff to come,
a reckless driver hit their car, killing her dad, grandma, and her
sister. Even though I did not know the family, the word spread back
to me and many of my friends. I can not imagine how that changed the
lives of their family and friends. As a young driver, I can take many
steps to ensure the safety of myself and other drivers around me. I
will continue to know my surroundings and not take risks while
driving. I can also prevent accidents by driving the speed limit and
encouraging my friends and family to do the same. To prevent the use
of my phone, I keep it out of my reach, and put it on do not disturb
while I am driving. As I become older, it is also important that I
don’t become riskier just because I think I am a better driver.
Although many car accidents may not be preventable, taking these
steps could help reduce the number of deaths because of driving.
