As
kids become teenagers, they begin to crave for freedom. At some
points that want becomes a need. One of the primarily ways teenagers
achieve freedom is by attaining their driver’s licenses when they
turn sixteen years old. However, sometimes the excitement of
attaining a license blinds some teenagers of the true dangers of
being out on the important road. Due to the number of risks and the
potential for loss of life, teenagers, as well as adults, must have a
proper drivers ed.

Taking
a drivers ed course reduces the rates of deaths in motor
vehicle accidents by educating people about the rules of the road.
The most important lesson taught in a drivers ed course is
that it is not only your life at stake when you get on the road. The
road is to be shared with other drivers and their passengers. People
who are self-centered and lack empathy are the most dangerous on the
road. Drivers who believe texting or driving under the influence have
no effect, neglect the high rates of death caused by those actions
and unfortunately most killed or not the person who did the deed but
innocent individuals on the road. On the road, signs give crucial
pieces of information, but many people can not identify the various
signs. Lacking the knowledge of the meaning of a sign could lead to
deadly motor vehicle accidents. Not only do proper drivers ed
courses teach an individual what road signs indicate, but what to do
in certain driving situations- such as when the driving is less
favorable or in a construction zone- to reduce the panic that could
cause a driver to lose control of the wheel. By taking a driver’s
education course, a driver is taking the first steps to reduce the
number of deaths caused while driving.

When
I was fifteen years old my mother went to get donuts one summer
morning However, my mother did not make it back that day. My mother
was driving on a one-way street when a woman late for her hair
appointment decided instead of going around the corner after missing
the turn to do a quick turn back, hitting my mother’s car. While
the woman was uninjured, my mother’s car was a few inches from
hitting a fire hydrant and her car was totaled. Unable to get out of
the car by herself, she had to be pulled out. Due to the woman’s
reckless driving and lack of empathy for others on the road, my
mother suffered serious injuries resulting in months of physical
therapy.

Due
to watching my mother’s experience, I have taken a driver’s
education course in high school to educate myself, as I believe
others should. People often watch their family members and friends
drive recklessly and say nothing. If people would take the steps to
educate their friends and themselves on rules of the road, there
would be fewer motor vehicles death.
