Louisiana Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System
Louisiana uses a GDL system to gradually introduce driving responsibilities to teens. Here’s how it works:
1. Learner’s Permit (Age 15)
- Must complete a state-approved 38-hour driver education course (30 hours classroom + 8 hours behind-the-wheel).
- Pass the vision and written knowledge tests.
- Drive with a licensed adult age 21+ (or 18+ if a sibling).
- Hold permit for a minimum of 180 days.
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving (15 at night).
2. Intermediate License (Age 16)
- Pass a road skills test.
- No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM unless accompanied by a licensed adult or for school/work activities.
- Limit of one non-family passenger under age 21 between 6 PM and 5 AM.
- No cellphone use while driving (including hands-free).
3. Full License (Age 17)
- Available to teens who have held an intermediate license for at least 12 months without violations.
