A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Turn of the Wheel

The first time I sat behind the wheel of a car, I was terrified. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. My father, sitting beside me, calmly said, "Relax. The car will go where you look. If you look at the tree, you will hit the tree. Look at the road ahead." That simple advice has stayed with me not just for driving, but for life. I am Apurv, a young man from a small town in Maharashtra, India. I come from a Dalit community a community that has faced centuries of discrimination, exclusion, and denial of basic human dignity. For generations, people like me were told we were unworthy of education, of opportunity, of dreams. But my father, a government employee who will retire this year with no wealth to pass on, taught me that the road ahead is not determined by where you come from, but by where you choose to go. And I have chosen to go far. Growing up, I never had the luxury of dreaming big. My family's income was under ₹8 lakhs per year barely enough to survive. When I received an unconditional offer from University College London (UCL), ranked 9th globally, it felt like a dream too big to be real. But dreams don't come true by wishing; they come true by driving toward them. To pay my tuition deposit, my family pawned our gold jewellery. My father, who has worked his entire life to give me a chance, looked at me and said, "I cannot leave you anything except an education. Drive yourself forward." That is what I intend to do. This scholarship is not just about money. It is about the right to keep moving forward. Every driver knows that the road is unpredictable—potholes, sharp turns, sudden stops. But a good driver learns to navigate them. My life has been filled with potholes and sharp turns, but I have never stopped driving. The Driver Education Scholarship understands that education is like driving—it requires focus, discipline, and the courage to take the wheel. Just as a driver must be alert to avoid accidents, a student must be alert to avoid the pitfalls of uncertainty. This scholarship is not just about funding; it is about acknowledging that the journey matters as much as the destination. I am a first-generation student the first in my family to study abroad. I have worked tirelessly to get where I am. I completed my Bachelor of Pharmacy with strong grades, earned certifications in Good Clinical Practice and Drug Development, and was selected for the McKinsey Forward Learning Program 2025. I have published research on regenerative medicine and presented my work at an international conference. But more importantly, I have the drive. I have the discipline. I have the hunger to succeed not just for myself, but for every Dalit student who has been told they don't belong. I want to be the representation my community has never had. I want to show that the road is open to us too.When I complete my MSc in Drug Discovery and Pharma Management at UCL, I will return to India. I will work in the pharmaceutical industry to improve access to life-saving medicines for underserved communities.I will mentor Dalit students who dream of studying abroad. I will use my education to drive change to ensure that the next generation does not have to pawn their gold to pay for their dreams. I will also be a safe, responsible driver. I understand that driving is not just a skill it is a privilege and a responsibility. I will follow traffic rules, respect other drivers, and ensure that I am always alert and focused. Just as I navigate the roads of London, I will navigate the roads of my life with care, discipline, and purpose. My father taught me that the car goes where you look. I am looking straight ahead at UCL, at a career in global pharma, at a future where my children will never have to pawn their gold to study. I am looking at a road that leads to breaking the cycle of poverty and discrimination in my family. This Driver Education Scholarship is a turn in that road a chance to refuel, to keep driving, to reach the destination I have been dreaming of since I was a child sitting in the backseat, watching my father drive with steady hands.
