A Lesson I Will Never Forget

My name is Manuel Novillo Garcia, and I am currently an Accounting student at Rutgers Business School at Rutgers University-Newark. Driving is something that most of us do all the time, and sometimes we don't really think about how dangerous it can be. From my own experience, I learned that being a safe driver is not only about following the rules. It is also about knowing when the conditions are not safe and making the right decision before something bad happens.

When I was 18 years old, I had an experience that really changed the way I see driving. I was driving with my little brother, who was only seven years old at the time. It was a very dark and foggy night, and we were driving through an area surrounded by woods. I could barely see the road in front of me. I wasn't speeding or trying to drive recklessly, but I made the mistake of continuing to drive at a normal speed even though I couldn't see well.

Looking back, I should have slowed down a lot more or stopped the car somewhere safe and waited until I could see better. Instead, I kept going. At one point, I ended up hitting a rock, which damaged my tire and rim. When that happened, I almost lost control of the car. Everything happened so fast, but thankfully I was able to get control of the car again and stop.

My brother and I had some minor injuries, and the car did not have a lot of body damage. The tire and rim had to be replaced, but that was not what scared me the most. When I got out of the car after stopping, I realized that we were only inches away from a cliff. If the car had gone just a little farther, my brother and I could have fallen down the cliff. My father ended up coming to pick us up, and both my brother and I were really scared.

That moment stayed with me because my little brother was only seven, and I was the person responsible for him. I kept thinking about what could have happened just because I didn't take the weather and the road conditions seriously enough. I wasn't trying to be irresponsible, but I learned that you don't have to be speeding or doing something crazy for an accident to happen. Sometimes one bad decision is enough.

Unfortunately, this is not the only experience that has shown me how serious driving can be. I have also known people close to me who have been involved in DUI charges and fatal car accidents. Seeing what happened to them and the people around them showed me how one decision behind the wheel can change someone's life forever. It doesn't only affect the driver. It can affect their family, friends, passengers, and even people they don't know. Seeing people close to me go through these situations made the importance of safe driving even more real to me.

This is why I think driver education is very important for reducing deaths on the road. Driver education teaches us the rules, but it should also teach people how to react to situations like bad weather, fog, rain, being tired, being distracted, or being under the influence. If you are not able to focus enough while driving, you should not keep driving like everything is normal. A crash can happen in an instant. It might not always be completely your fault, but being focused and prepared can help you avoid an accident or make the situation less dangerous.

There are also simple things everyone can do to reduce the number of deaths from driving. People should wear their seat belts, stay off their phones, avoid speeding, never drink and drive, and pay attention to the conditions around them. I also think people think that getting somewhere faster is better than being safe.

After what happened to my brother and me, and after seeing what people close to me have experienced, I try to be more careful about the decisions I make behind the wheel. If the weather is bad, I slow down. If I cannot see clearly, I don't just continue driving at the same speed. I also try to remind my friends and family to be careful when I see something that could put them or other people in danger. If someone has been drinking, I would rather help them find another way home than let them make a decision that they could regret for the rest of their life.

I was lucky that night. My brother and I made it home, and the biggest damage was repairable. But I know that it could have ended completely differently. That experience, together with what I have seen happen to people close to me, taught me a lesson that I will always remember. Being a good driver is not just about protecting yourself. When you are behind the wheel, your decisions can affect your passengers, other drivers, and their families too. That is why I believe driver education and making responsible decisions on the road can truly save lives.
