The Importance of Driver Education
Driver education is not just about passing a test or receiving a license. It’s about instilling a mindset of caution, responsibility, and awareness. Too many drivers see their license as an entitlement rather than a privilege. In reality, every time we get behind the wheel, we are making decisions that could mean life or death, not just for ourselves but for others on the road.
Had the drivers on the highway that tragic day been more alert, more cautious, my boyfriend might still be here. Driver education programs should emphasize the dangers of inattentiveness, speeding, and failing to look out for stranded vehicles. When drivers don’t respect the hazards of the road—when they fail to notice someone on the shoulder or allow distractions to take over—lives are lost.
Driver education should focus more on defensive driving and preparing drivers to handle emergency situations. Drivers need to be taught not only how to control their vehicles but also how to recognize potential risks and make safe, thoughtful decisions. Whether it’s reducing speed when they see a stranded vehicle, moving over to give more space, or simply paying full attention to the road, these decisions are vital to preventing tragedies like the one I experienced.
Steps to Reduce Driving-Related Deaths
There are several ways to reduce deaths related to driving, and it begins with enforcing laws that protect people like my boyfriend, who are in vulnerable positions on the road. Stricter enforcement of "Move Over" laws—which require drivers to switch lanes or slow down when approaching vehicles on the shoulder—could save countless lives. I often wonder how many people even know that these laws exist or how many drivers actively follow them.
Infrastructure improvements could also make a difference. Better signage, improved lighting, and increased use of technology such as warning systems for broken-down vehicles or smart road sensors could alert drivers to hazards well in advance. Campaigns that promote awareness of these laws and remind drivers of the dangers of distraction could also help. For example, public service announcements on the radio or television, particularly during holiday weekends, could remind drivers of the importance of being vigilant and slowing down for roadside emergencies.
Personal Experience with Irresponsible Driving
Though I was not present the day my boyfriend was killed, the pain of losing someone to a car accident lingers with me every day. It wasn’t just one careless driver who hit him—several cars struck him, one after the other. This tells me that many drivers are not paying attention or are driving too fast to respond to hazards. They might not be reckless on purpose, but inattentiveness is a form of negligence, and it leads to devastation.
I’ve also witnessed friends and family members driving irresponsibly, whether speeding, ignoring road signs, or using their phones while driving. I’ve had to remind people that these small moments of carelessness can have lifelong consequences. I think of my boyfriend’s daughter, who will never forget what she saw that day, and I know that no momentary distraction is worth the risk.
Becoming a Safer Driver
For me, being a better driver is no longer just about following the law—it’s about honoring my boyfriend’s memory. I have become more vigilant, more cautious, and more aware of the dangers that lurk on every road. I always drive defensively, making sure I scan my surroundings and adjust my speed when necessary. If I see someone broken down on the shoulder, I slow down and move over, thinking of how easily that could have been my loved one, or someone else’s.
I’ve also made it a point to speak out when I see others driving irresponsibly. It’s uncomfortable to call someone out, but the potential consequences of staying silent are too great. I’ll remind them to put their phone away or tell them to slow down if I see they’re going too fast. It’s a small act, but it could make a difference.
Conclusion
Driver education has the power to save lives, but only if we take it seriously. The loss of my boyfriend has driven home the reality that every decision we make on the road carries weight. By pushing for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, raising awareness, and practicing defensive driving, we can help prevent the heartache that comes from losing a loved one in an avoidable accident. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can all play a part in making sure others get home safely.
