People have been driving for as long as cars have been around and driver education has been around for around half that time. In many cases of driving, accidents have occurred that resulted in serious injuries or even death across the world and can sometimes involve more than one person. There are over 6 million car accidents in the United States every year, between 20 and 50 million people receive nonfatal injuries, and in 2021 it was recorded that out of the 39,508 fatal motor vehicle crashes, 42,939 deaths occurred which is 12.9 deaths per 100,000 people the majority of which were caused by speeding, lack of scanning the surrounding area, and distractions. As the years pass by, it seems as though the number of driver-related deaths continues to increase as people sometimes choose to ignore road safety for selfish reasons that cause harm to others and their families. There seems to be no end to this problem despite the work people put in to try and alleviate the problem and make the roads safe again which is why driver education is mandatory for people to get their permits and licenses before they get behind the wheel. Driver education plays a crucial role in reducing the number of driving-related deaths by providing essential knowledge and skills to drivers by teaching proper road safety, defensive driving, and road rules. These practices can prevent accidents and minimize their severity while creating well-rounded individuals who can significantly contribute to creating safer roads and reducing fatalities. There are multiple ways to reduce the number of driver-related deaths with driver education being one of them, others include the improvement of infrastructure which includes better signage, road markings, and lighting that can enhance safety for all road users, public awareness campaigns can bring awareness to all of the risky behaviors people do that can cause accidents and try to prevent them, improve emergency response to ensure timely assistance to accident victims and sometimes prevent deaths, conduct research to learn about new strategies to further reduce fatalities related to driving, etc. I have been in about four car accidents in my life, none of them were life-threatening but they were all someone else’s fault. Each time I got into an accident, it amazed me how it could happen so quickly and how people could ignore certain aspects of the road, crash into someone, not have any accountability for the situation, and only try to blame the other driver when it was their fault. I also have a friend, who is not the best driver in my eyes, who got into a car accident last year and landed in a ditch. In this specific accident, her car was fine and she continued to drive recklessly, resulting in her getting into another accident fairly recently and completely totaling her car. In both instances, she seemed to take it as a joke like she wasn’t putting her and someone else’s life at risk. I understand that sometimes people laugh to keep from being upset but the number of times she has almost gotten into accidents due to her reckless driving and still doing nothing to fix it speaks volumes about what she thinks about road safety. Some individuals don’t care about road safety but I pride myself on being a safe driver because, for a long time, I was afraid of driving on the road so once I got my license I told myself that I needed to be careful to prove that I was able to drive safely despite being a little nervous. Even though I consider myself a good driver, I can become a better and safer driver by staying updated on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices, staying awake and alert while driving, getting someone to check my vehicle for any problems to make sure my car is completely safe to drive, be patient and respect other drivers as I don’t know what they may be experiencing that could affect their driving, remain calm and avoid confrontations as road rage incidents can be dangerous, and continuously try to improve my driving to enhance my skills to be prepared for whatever may happen when driving. I can also help the people around me become better drivers by holding them accountable for their actions, providing constructive feedback when I observe unsafe driving practices, staying supportive as they enhance their driving skills, and encouraging and praising them for their hard work. It is important to try to bring about a new, safe age of driving and provide a positive experience for new drivers across the world.
