Everyday, every minute, every second there is a car crash. Everytime we step foot in a car we are not only putting ourselves in danger we are putting everyone else on the roads in danger. No one wakes up in the morning and decides “today I am going to get in a car crash”. Sometimes car crashes are inevitable; they are bound to happen due to many different things such as weather. That doesn’t mean there aren’t steps we can take to prevent them. Because even though some are inevitable there are a majority that are due to drivers being stupid.
In order to get a drivers license we all had to go through some sort of drivers ed course whether it was an in person class or online course. Even though we all have gone through these courses it doesn’t mean that we all listened or even took the time to care about it. Why didn’t we think it was important to care or pay attention? Because we never would think it would be us in a fatal car accident until it is. I think it is extremely important to pay attention to these types of courses because the things you learn in them could save your life as well as so many different people.
There are many different steps that can be taken to be safer drivers. There are also very many distractions that cause crashes. Staying away from these distractions could prevent very scary accidents. One of the main distractions is phones, many people think they can just change a song, send a quick text, maybe even scroll on social media. Nothing bad will happen until they are halfway through another car. It is crazy how fast things can happen, refraining from skipping a song, texting someone for 5 more minutes could save someone's life. I know how tempting it is to just grab your phone and do something because I have done it everyone has done it. But when you really think about it then it is very irresponsible. People need to realize that driving is not a right, it is a privilege. We have a privilege to drive and every second we are distracted we have lost that privilege.
Phones are just one of the biggest distractions but aren't the only one. We as people have the privilege at 15 years old to get a driver's permit and at the age of 16 to get our driver’s license. It is a very exciting thing as teenagers to get because it means more freedom not having to rely on parents to take us places. When it comes to teenagers a lot of them try to impress one another especially males they want to act cool and impress their friends it's just their nature. Which means sometimes they are reckless drivers which in seconds stupid decisions can lead to extremely fatal car crashes. Teenagers are stupid sometimes but so are adults, in 2022 13,524 people died due to drunk driving accidents in the United States. Drinking and driving I think is the stupidest thing a person can do. There are teenagers that drink and drive as well as adults and you’ll hear them say “I didn’t even drink that much I am okay to drive” which is the stupidest thing a person can say. The second you had even a sip of alcohol you should not get behind a wheel, you should lose your privilege to drive because you just put everyone on the road's life in danger.
I personally have never been in a car accident thankfully but I do know a handful of people that have been. Over this past summer I had a friend that died in a car accident due to someone else’s stupid decisions. My dad has been in a very bad car accident that involved drunk driving. He was not the one driving but he was in the car, everyone in that car should’ve died that night but no one did. My dad flew through the windshield and had many injuries and had to go through surgeries and physical therapy. He learned a very important lesson that day he learned the hard way.
As I said before there are many different steps we can take to be better safer drivers. We can stop using our phones, stop trying to act cool in front of our peers, stop driving drunk. It's not a matter of if we CAN do the steps, it's a matter of if we WILL do the steps. Changing stupid habits we have could save lives. So why wait, let's start now and all try to become better safer drivers, you never know what lives you can save.
