The
phone rings and I go to pick it up and it’s my dad. He sounds
worried and there is a siren in the background. I ask him what is
going on and he tells me to give the phone to my mom. I ran to give
her the phone. I stand in the doorway, as I see the panic that
spreads across her face as I hear the word accident. I froze, my
sister and dad were driving to one of her softball games when they
got T-bones by a car that had run a red light, because of the new
flex lanes. I had always known how dangerous driving was but it never
really hit me until it affected my life directly. From that point on
I had night frights of being in a car crash and watching my parents
and siblings die right before my eyes. This was terrible because I
had to take drivers Ed next year. I was horrified as I was called to
go driving with the instructor later that year. I kept remembering
what my teacher taught me for the past two months. When I got in the
driver's seat for the very first time I freaked out all the
nightmares came flooding back. The Instructor could see the horror on
my face and he turned to me and said it was going to be fine. He told
me “Don’t worry”. I immediately remembered how to start the car
and where to put my hands on the wheel and how and when to check my
blind spots. I am not saying I magically did perfect but I was no
longer that nervous. Education has helped me watch out for hazards
and helped keep me safe while driving. Driving is a privilege not a
right, so you must gain the knowledge and responsibility it takes to
be a safe driver, because when you are on the road your actions
affect everyone else.
