Drivers and Thrivers: Education for All Situations

If
people were more educated and prepared for real-life driving
situations, then fewer deaths would occur as a result of driving.
There are too many people on the road who do not know how to react
when faced with difficult decisions. There are people who do not see
the importance of defensive driving. They feel that it is more
important to get to the place where they are going quickly rather
than safely. Some of this way of thinking is the result of not being
properly trained on how to drive. Drivers should be educated in how
to react to every driving condition. They should be taught to drive
defensively, and they should be tested on this ability.

The
first step in reducing the number of deaths related to driving is to
make more training requirements before people can get their licenses.
It should not be as easy as it is to pass a driving test. There are
too many people who are able to pass their drivers’ test without
driving the required number of hours. Some parents are so desperate
to get their kids driving that they will sign off on something that
is not true. One of my friends passed her permit test and then did
not practice driving. She had her friend take her to the DMV after
hours and show her the route she would be tested on. She passed her
test and received her license, but she only knew how to drive one
route. My friend was only required to know how to make three right
turns, switch lanes once, and make two left turns. She was in a car
accident a couple of weeks after getting her license. Fortunately, no
one was hurt and the damage was minor. However, car accidents like
this one would not have happened if people were required to have more
training before receiving their license.

I
believe that people should be required to take a Drivers ed
Class. These classes could even be offered by schools to make them
more accessible to people. In addition, the Driving Test could be
administered through the Class, which would allow for more time to
make the test more difficult and harder to pass. Driver’s would
have more training and be better prepared for real-life situations.
The next step is to require drivers to renew their license every ten
years. They should have to take a class or pass a detailed test on
their driving abilities. This would ensure that everyone on the road
is a well-trained and prepared driver. In order to make myself a
safer driver, I read over the state driving instruction book to
remind myself of driving laws. I also try to remind myself to drive
defensively. I remind my friends and family to do the same and often
question them when they are not being defensive drivers. I believe in
the importance of helping others to be safer and more prepared
drivers.
