Driver’s Education Essay

Driver’s Education was removed from the curriculum at my high school. I think that this was a huge mistake! We, as most high schools, had a student killed as a result of a driving accident before I graduated. I believe that the more information on a subject the better and driving is one of the most dangerous things teenagers have to learn, at a time in our lives when we are overloaded with information and new discoveries!

I believe that more hands on driver’s education could potentially reduce deaths in teens from driving related accidents. I’ve heard stories from my mother of the driver’s education courses when she attended high school and the students being excited to take the course! The local car dealers supplied new vehicles for the students to drive during the course and all the kids of course wanted to participate!

I had a small fender-bender while I was in high school also. No one was hurt fortunately, but I was driving to school and did not pay attention when changing lanes. It was my first accident and I was hysterical! I wouldn’t say I was driving irresponsibly, just not paying as much attention as I should have. Thank goodness mine was a learning experience with very minor repercussions!

I grew up in a tourist town and I’ve seen drivers young and old driving irresponsibly at times. Sometimes people seem to lose some of their driving skills when on vacation. They are of course distracted by new things to see, but if they just remembered that the road doesn’t end on the other side of the traffic light and being in the wrong lane is not a problem that can’t be solved a little further down the road with a little patience, there would be fewer accidents.

After my accident my mother and others commented that I started to drive with much more caution and I haven’t had another accident since.

I believe that in addition to making driver’s education in high schools mandatory, that supplemental defensive driving courses should be should be offered also. I think with both of these changes that at least the newest drivers may be better ones!!
