A few steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths are; reducing phone usage, driving without headphones, driving in clear weather, following speed limits, and trusting the government to provide clear signs. Phone usage takes the attention away from the road causing distractions. When your eyes are off the road for just a few seconds a multitude of damage can occur. Our phones capture the eyes greatly and are an extreme distraction when it comes to music, notifications, and more. Listening to music in the car is not negative but when a driver has headphones in it is dangerous and in some states illegal. There needs to be the realization that it decreases awareness of your surroundings leading to a likely crash. The weather causes a lot of damage and road wrecks and we can observe that it is always difficult to drive in good weather. That is not necessarily the case, yet a possible action step is when there is bad weather you should account for extra time so when you drive to your destination you can drive a few miles below the speed limit to stay safe through this type of harsh weather. The speed limit is a large issue within every city and road. Everyone speeds or excessively goes over the safe limit. A large percentage of crashes occur when students or adults are driving too fast, or collide at such a fast speed with another car. A final reason that can be taken into consideration to help provide safer roads is relying on the government to provide better signs and clear routes in intersections. I am blessed with great clear intersections with updated signs and traffic lights.
I am 16 which means that I am about to get my license after having my permit for around six months. I have been in one car accident already, and it was upsetting. I was very exhausted and it was still my first few weeks of driving and I had never experienced parking in a full parking lot before. As I pulled in I did well and then my mom asked me to scoot up just a little more because the back end of our van was out a little far. As I was slowly pulling forward a car in front of me pulled into the empty spot. This startled me and I hit the rear end of the car because I got too close.
From this experience I learned many things. When you are tired or over-stressed do not drive, have a friend or family member help you. I acted out of fear and pressure. I was exhausted and should have asked my mom for help. I felt pressured because it was my first time and it upset me. Thankfully no one was hurt and both cars were okay. I would say I was not driving super irresponsibly but just overly nervous.
There are a few steps in which I can become a better driver myself. I personally am signed up for transportation solutions and driver’s classes before I receive my license. Those classes will aid me and teach me more details and specific hazards I need to be aware of. I can be careful by driving the speed limit even if other cars are being pressured and rude.
In conclusion, there are many positive reasons to enroll and experience driver education classes. Every driver should work on limiting distractions and following laws that are set for our safety, and each individual could improve their driving skills in some way. Safety is the most important part of driving. You would rather be late than hurt!
