While driver education informs drivers about safe driving habits such as rules on the road, it also plays a key role in raising awareness of potential risks associated with driving as well. With there being roughly 1.8-2.8 million new drivers per year, many of these drivers are more susceptible to higher risks, which is why driver education is beneficial in providing training on how to avoid tragic accidents. While participating in a graduated driver's license program during high school, I gained valuable insights into driver education and potential risks. Unaware of the severity and importance of always being cautious, driver education taught me how small mistakes on the road can lead to even greater problems for me and others on the road. Some may think that accidents are something rare that do not necessarily happen often, however this is not the case. Every 60 seconds about 13 accidents occur in the United States totaling up to over six million accidents over the span of a year. This topic and statistical information is discussed throughout driver education to emphasize the importance of being alert of your driving and that of others. During the driver program, I had also learned that although we may be confident in our driving abilities, one should always be vigilant of others driving as well and quick to react to unpredictable situations that can lead to a collision.
Lastly, driver education fosters a culture of responsibility within everyone who drives a vehicle. As mentioned previously, there are so many benefits of driver education that teaches everyone valuable knowledge to implement in their everyday lives. But in addition to this, driver education instills a sense of responsibility so that drivers can be more careful and prudent while driving. Though driving can seem like an easy task, once you are behind the wheel, you now carry the responsibility of yourself and others if you are driving for other passengers as well. With temptations of playing loud music or messing around, driver education can steer your thinking and know the rules and regulations to be followed to lessen the chances of making these mistakes that can lead to traumatic results. Using videos and illustrations provided through driver education programs like the one I participated in; it gave me a visual representation of what these scenarios can look like. Being able to put the learning into perspective to see the great responsibility every individual has behind the wheel was very beneficial for me to keep in mind.
To reduce driving-related deaths, three important steps include mandating driver education for all new drivers, improving road infrastructure, and strengthening the enforcement of traffic laws. Driver education is not yet required in all states, leaving some drivers without the critical knowledge they need beyond what they learn from a written or driving test. Requiring such courses for all new drivers would ensure they understand road safety, traffic laws, and responsible driving practices. Additionally, improved road infrastructure can play a significant role in preventing accidents. Incorporating features like radar speed signs, rumble strips, clearer sidewalks, and well-maintained roadways can create safer driving conditions and reduce risks. Lastly, strengthening law enforcement is crucial to ensuring that drivers comply with traffic laws. Violations often go unnoticed or unpunished, leading to dangerous behavior on the roads. Law enforcement officers should focus on identifying and penalizing violations, while tools like security cameras at intersections and busy areas can help monitor compliance and deter unsafe driving. By addressing education, infrastructure, and enforcement, these measures can significantly enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities.
Associated with the measures that should be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, I have been able to encounter or live out an experience in which these steps would have been beneficial to prevent the irresponsible driving of my close friend. After my high school's football district win, my friend and I decided to go out to get ice cream at the local ice cream shop nearby to celebrate. Shortly after, she recommended driving around her neighborhood to kill time before I had to head back home. As we did this and drove around the neighborhood, she began to drive irresponsibly by going over the speed limit, swerving around the roundabouts, and paying no clear attention to the traffic signs. Due to this, I became fearful that one more bad turn or mistake would lead to an accident with an incoming car. So I decided to suggest we head back home or stay at one of our houses for the night, but she did not budge. We kept on driving around the neighborhood until she turned to grab something from the back seat and almost hit a teenager on their bike crossing the road. Luckily, I had seen the light from the side of the bike and told her to brake. As a result, the biker was angry and yelling at her since she was so close to making a collision due to a small irresponsible mistake. After the incident, she became conscious of her driving knowing how severe this collision would be. On our way back home, we began to discuss how even a minor mistake behind the wheel can cause a crash or accident in seconds and how grateful we were that this served as a lesson with minor consequences.
To be a safer driver and help others on the road, I follow traffic laws, carpool when needed, always wear my seatbelt, and ensure my car is properly maintained. While comfortable driving near home, I remain attentive, avoiding overconfidence since unexpected situations can arise. I prioritize safety by reminding passengers to buckle up and leading by example—avoiding distractions, loud music, and impaired driving. Maintaining my vehicle prevents breakdowns or accidents and minimizes environmental impact. By staying focused and cautious, I aim to protect myself and others, promoting a culture of responsible driving.
