Is the Distraction Worth the Hassle?

In February 2018, my mother and I made the decision to celebrate my upcoming birthday by trying out a new restaurant that had recently opened in our neighborhood. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the entrance, filled with the vibrant aromas of various dishes wafting through the air. We ate, laughed and chatter filled the space around us, but our focus remained on each other. We shared stories from my childhood, reminiscing about cherished memories and silly moments that had shaped our bond. With my birthday just a few days away, I was brimming with excitement. I could hardly contain my joy as I thought about leaving the pre-teen years behind; soon, I would officially be a teenager. The thought filled me with a sense of freedom and new possibilities, and I was eager to embrace this next chapter of my life. It was a warm, heartfelt evening. Upon leaving the restaurant and turning back onto the main road, we were hit head-on by a distracted driver. The joy we had been feeling was quickly replaced by fear and sadness. The impact of the collision was so severe that it caused the car to start smoking. Due to the shock of everything happening so quickly, I ended up passing out for a short period. At just twelve years old, I witnessed an incredible display of compassion as civilians rushed to help strangers in need. This unfortunate incident showed me that difficult circumstances can bring out the best in people. The distracted driver collided with my mother's side of the car, resulting in her sustaining much more damage than I did. Seeing my mother endure such pain inspired me to never want to cause such pain to someone else.
As I have reached the legal age to operate a vehicle, I recognize the importance of becoming a responsible and safe driver. To achieve this, I plan to take several proactive measures. These include enrolling in a comprehensive driving course to deepen my understanding of road rules and safety practices. Additionally, I intend to regularly practice my driving skills in various conditions, such as different weather and traffic situations, to become more adept and confident behind the wheel. In encouraging others to drive safely, I aim to lead by example—wearing my seatbelt, avoiding distractions like my phone, and refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
